I've searched to find out when the Perry family started going to Tarrytown United Methodist Church. There is the non-specific statement that they were members in the 1990s. I suspect they started attending in the late 1980s and underwent a transformational change from DemonRAT campaign manager for Al Gore to a evangelical, conservative Christian. This is only theory because there is little information about Perry's church attendance. I believe minister, Rev. Jim Mayfield was a far cry from the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. I would say, Mayfield was conservative from the comments he made about George W. Bush:

“It is obvious that he had faulty intelligence reports and that he also chose to listen to the wrong set of advisers,” and, “Yet I remain convinced he was doing the best he knew to do and that he was motivated by the intention of striving toward worldwide individual freedom and democracy.”

Finally, I mispoke in saying that Tarrytown United Methodist Church “is largely in the non-denominational, evangelical style of mega-church with power point sermons, rock band song ministry, and large screen TVs.” This is the description of Lake Hills Church, which Perry began attending in 2010. Sorry for the misinformation.

There is little I can find that describes what Tarrytown United Methodist Church was like under Rev. Jim Mayfield. I know the last time I attended a Methodist Church, they had an authentic American Indian prayer circle complete with drums and the burning of sage. However, I seriously doubt you would have seen anything like that in Mayfield’s church. In Wright's church you may have found some African drums.

Finally, I believe it was the church that transformed Rick Perry. I just don't have the confirmation that nails anything down. So, take it as theory. Sorry.

LOL...there is nothing evangelical or conservative about the United Methodist Church.
