Look, the Republicans under Boehner have won. Obama is marginalized and even Reid is planning to save $2.7 trillion. If we pull off a deal at the last minute before U.S. bond ratings fall - even for the brief period they would - it would make Obama look even more ineffective.

We are winning because we are reversing the spending model of government. Like any big machine, there's a lot of inertia to overcome.

I think you`ve generally hit it on the head. What should have been a rubber stamp for Obama has instead been a major hit. Boehner getting anything from this is a win. Let`s say Boehner crafts something the Tea Party loves—it gets out of the House, and Reid and Obama reject it—the end. I`m not thrilled by what Boehner ISN`T getting, but people`s expectations of what is possible here are, frankly, ridiculous. We`re going to end up reinforcing the idea that the right wants to cut and the left, even in this horrible economy, wants to spend, spend, spend ina way that will cling to them for years. That`s a win.

The GOP is just going in the hole more slowly. Both parties are parties of federal spending beyond tax revenue; which means both parties like federal control.
