If we can’t get abortion outlawed, I’d at least like a law that requires women to get some distinct tatoo mark every time they get one. Then, when I meet a woman, I can look at the back of her neck, and see how many innocent lives she has slaughtered.
And then you ask ...
How many women, if you asked them outright, would admit to it, and how many would lie out of shame?
Regretful post-abortive moms (of which I am one) might be lying because it's people with attitudes like yours that are on the receiving end. Want to help end abortion? First off, stop looking for scarlet letters (are you really that much better of a person than the ones you scourge?), and, more importantly, this from Fr. John A. Hardon:
We are only channels of grace to others in the measure that we are possessed of God’s grace ourselves. Let me repeat in the clearest words in my disposal. I would restate our thesis in two propositions.
  • Proposition #1 There is no stopping abortion without an ocean of grace from Jesus Christ. No way will human means stop abortion.

  • #2 The principal source of this grace is the Holy Eucharist.
[emphasis: mine]

P.S. If you do not already know, Fr. John A. Hardon was good buddies with Mother Teresa of Calcutta (and vice versa; she recommended his writings to us), and we all know how *she* felt about abortion.

Thank you so much, dear mlizzy, for speaking out for us post-abortion women. I really believe that, until we speak up and let it be known that even “good” people have been deeply harmed by an abortion decision, the issue will continue to be marginalized and stigmatized.

I know many people who are stalwart abortion opponents and they are so strong BECAUSE they have experienced the horrible truth about abortion. Thank you for expressing the words of Fr. John A. Hardon. He is exactly right that we “We are only channels of grace to others in the measure that we are possessed of God’s grace ourselves.”. Just as the man in the temple area beating his breast because of his sinfulness and pleading with God for mercy, we learn that God truly forgives when we “come clean” about our fallen-ness. He is ready to lift us up and bless us and use us for the cause of righteousness.

Women who have had abortions fall usually into two categories. The ones who are in denial, speak out FOR abortion, sometimes angrily. The others, the victors, who face up to what they did, forgive others and themselves and allow their experience to help others make a better choice for life. Isn't God wonderful that he can make ALL things work together for our good!!!
