Rick Perry's Gardasil Problem
RealClearPolitics ^ | June 4, 2011 | Tom Bevan

Posted on 07/25/2011 4:37:40 PM PDT by AHerald

Gov. Perry chose to bypass the legislature and on Feb. 2, 2007, he issued an executive order making Texas the first state in the country requiring all sixth-grade girls to receive the three-shot vaccination series (which cost about $120 per shot).

...

The controversy over Perry's decision deepened as it came to light that his former chief of staff was a lobbyist for Merck and that his chief of staff's mother-in-law, Rep. Dianne White Delisi, was the state director of an advocacy group bankrolled by Merck to push legislatures across the country to put forward bills mandating the Gardasil vaccine for preteen girls.

...

Just six weeks after Perry put pen to paper, the Texas House rebuked him on March 14, 2007, passing HB 1098, overturning his executive order by a vote of 119-21. The Senate followed suit the following month by a vote of 30-1.

...

On May 8, the day the law went into effect, Perry held a press conference surrounded by women touched by cervical cancer. He bemoaned the tenor of a debate that he asserted had been "hijacked by politics and posturing," and blamed future cervical cancer deaths on those who opposed his mandate -- many of whom were fellow Republicans.

...

And in fact, two years later the National Vaccine Information Center issued a report raising serious questions over the harmful side effects of the drug.... an editorial on Gardasil in the Journal of the American Medical Association declared that "serious questions regarding the overall effectiveness of the vaccine" needed to be answered and that more long-term studies were called for.

It's amazing how these fools for Perry shrug this off. The man is not conservative. He made an executive order forcing children to take that dangerous vaccine. Who knows what kind of executive orders that phony would sign and force on us if he were President.

Whenever, you get a deceiving politician like Rick Perry faking Christianity, who tries to use God to get elected, you've got one wicked individual on your hands.

I think any politician whose track record lasts as long as 20 years is going to have some questionable ties and some self-serving directives. How much did the Keating Five hurt McCain last time around?

I think we're going to get in trouble if we ask our politicans to be saints. They're not. The temptations are great and are everywhere you look.

Oh, I hear you. That's a realistic viewpoint which I tend to share. I'm not looking for a saint, or a virgin in a brothel. The proof that all men are fallen and fallible is clear enough. But I am looking to first give my support to those candidates who best strive to represent the values I hold dear. As it looks right now, that isn't Rick Perry.

governor’s demagogic demonization of his opponents— cloaking himself as a pro-life defender while apparently blaming his opponents for future cervical cancer deaths. That’s ugly self-serving stuff. Perry comes off here as just another oily pol

Let’s see which opponent could you be talking about, deb medina, the paulnutz darling who in the last debate showed herself to be a paulnut but a TRUTHER as well. Paul and his ilk do not do well in Texas.

As someone who has known of Perry’s fumbles and his positive traits, I can say that he did not get re-elected more than any previous Governor by being any resemblence to all this PDS paulnutz BS you see here day in a day out.

Guardisil was NEVER a big issue in Texas, what Perry proposed had a Parental Optout clause, so was never MANDATORY. Trans Texas was bigger and we convinced Perry and TxDot to drop it.

I say if Guadisil is your key, then you are a pretend conservative hiding some suicidal ronpaul fetish.

Did you read the story I posted? The opponents I was referring to were not his rivals for governor, but those who voted to oppose his mandate, the overwhelming majority of the both houses of the Texas congress. Needless to say, he was pointing the finger of blame at a lot of fellow Republicans.

I say if Guadisil is your key, then you are a pretend conservative hiding some suicidal ronpaul fetish.

Gardasil is not my key issue. And for what it's worth, I do not support Ron Paul as a candidate for any political office, much less president of the US.

Please look ar who he’s supported in the past. He was a democrat before he found out you really need to be conservative in order to be electable in Texas. He is Romney with a pistol.

Look at what he did, not what he says.

Well the Perry bashers came out in force...perhaps if their females in their families were diagnosed with cervical cancer they would have a different take....nah...most of them have no idea...they are too stupid to understand or assume that the female members of their families are immune. Sure dream on fools!

i am a physician with 3 teenaged daughters. At the time I basically told my wife NONE of my girls was getting the vaccine. The long term studies haven't been done concerning possible side effects that may not be evident for a generation. Ever hear of DES. Was just a great drug for treating Premature onset of labor. Was used for decades, only one little problem.... The daughters that were born after exposure had incompetent cervix , increased risk for clear cell cervical cancer and increased risk for breast CA. Perry had some family financial ties to the company producing Gardasil. I don't trust him. I'd rather he stay put in Austin and pretend to be conservative than follow in the long line of RINOs that we've nominated recently.

So sayeth Sarah Palin...........

January 17, 2009

snip
That's why I am supporting Governor Rick Perry for re-election. He does what is right regardless of whether it is popular. He walks the walk of a true conservative. And he sticks to his guns – and you know how I feel about guns!....

Will you join me in supporting a true conservative for governor – Rick Perry? We need Texas’ diverse and strong economy to help pull us out of our economic troubles. That requires a proven CEO as the head of state government. Rick Perry is proven and principled. And we need that in the governor of our nation’s second largest state and most prosperous economy....
end snips

Sincerely,
Sarah Palin

I do oppose homosexual marriage but expect our side to use the Constitution consistently.

I did not know upholding the Constitution and not legalizing homosexual marriage were mutually exclusive endeavors.

How do you think it best to stop the fallacy of homosexual marriage and the subsidizing and promotion by the government of all things having do with homosexual sex from being imposed upon society?

There is a BIG differene from a disease you get by being breathed on by someone who is contagious and a disease you get when an infected person puts his penis into you.

Perry wanted to give this vaccine to girls as young as nine years old.

‘Perry supporters will say that there was an “opt out” provision. I suppose the question is why not an “opt in”’

Exactly. Nanny-state politicians should not make parents go through the burden, the nanny statists should have to do that.

The govt. should not raise our children.

Yeah, Gov. Palin and a lot of us was lied to by phony conservatives like Rick Perry. She also campaigned for the likes of people like Saxby or (Taxby) Chambliss who is one of the so-called "Gang of Six" in the Senate. He's turned out to be a RINO too.

Bottom line, I think Gov. Palin was deceived and thought she doing the right thing at the time. I'll grant her that one mistake. But Perry is a liar and a schemer and NO endorsement from anyone is going to change that.

I disagree. A conservative would might issued a proclamation ENCOURAGING use of the vaccine, but would not have REQUIRED it. Conservatives believe that the government shouldn’t order the lives of the governed.

On another level - the executive order is, to me, a clear case of political malpractice, as it mandated the use of a vaccine that had no track record. The illnesses and deaths that have occurred as apparent side effects of the vaccine were state-sanctioned, if only out of scientific naivete.

CAN and SHOULD are two entirely different concepts, FRiend.

Especially when the “full faith and credit” clause causes redefinition of marriage everywhere, because a few liberal states want to debase themselves.

Thank you, no I did not read the piece, having for the last few weeks had to endure massive dribble posted by the insane PDS Perry haters. I also issue a retraction on anything ronpaul, happy to hear you do have commonsense.

Perry is not perfect, but has more than endured the test of time here in Texas and has done us right on the whole.

On these facts alone I would never vote for Perry, we kept our daughter from getting this vaccine. We would either leave the state or go to a private school if this became law in our state. Perry is a non-starter for me and my family.
