I first saw this article online, and, of course, it just says that gunfire erupted at a crowded car show. This puzzled me, because every car show I have attended has been a distinctly calm, family-oriented event. It wasn’t until I read much farther down that it mentions it was a La Raza low rider car show. Wow, who would have thought that would attract a gang element?

My wife and I sponsored and put on a car show about five years ago here in Oklahoma City. The proceeds were given to a local charity that provided toys for poor children at Christmas. We allowed a local car club to help organize it in exchange for getting their name out. One woman in this car club took offense at us for not allowing a category for low riders to compete. I explained that I didn't want to invite any possibility of some local gang elements from being there. She sent out an email to everyone in the car club that I didn't want Hispanics showing up.

I had a meeting with the club and made it clear that I was mischaracterized. A week before our show, a local group (some group against youth violence) put on a low-rider show about three miles from where ours was going to be. A gang shooting erupted and people got shot. The woman stirring crap up never came around after that.
