Obama and Boehner Back at the Altar? (Boehner facing House leadership revolt)
ABC News ^ | Sunday, July 24, 2011 | Jonathan Karl

With the opening of Asian markets now hours away and talks between Congressional leaders at a stand-still, ABC News has learned of a new high-stakes turn in the debt ceiling drama.

I am told that Speaker Boehner and President Obama are once again having back-channel talks on a large-scale deficit reduction plan that would include cuts to entitlement programs and increases in tax revenues.

Boehner Obama are again negotiating a "grand bargain" address the debt crisis with deep spending cuts. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner just confirmed this in his pre-taped interview on "This Week."

SNIP

It now looks like the original framework is back in play – a deal with some $3 trillion in spending cuts and $800 billion in additional tax revenue.

One source described the talks as Boehner and the President “footsie” because the talks are indirect...

SNIP

I am told that Eric Cantor, Kevin McCarthy and Jeb Hensarling (the 2, 3, and 4 GOP leaders in the House) have all made it clear to Boehner they will not accept a deal that increases tax revenues by $800 billion.

If Boehner strikes such a deal with the President, he could lose more than 100 Republican votes in the House. It could ultimately cost him his Speakership. But it may be the only possible way to both avoid default and address the underlying debt crisis.

The tax revenues are the number that has been on the table for weeks. It is not a tax increase. It is presumed tax revenue increase from economic growth. Not a single rate would be changed. It presumes unemployment drops, more people work, more tax revenue comes into the govt. Not a tax increase at all, and the House GOP members would not oppose this.

How do you now that? Are you psychic?

When will Republicans get away from the idea of a ‘grand bargain’ with people who want a fundamentally different America than the people they represent.

Make a short term deal. Extend the deadline 30 or 60 days. Demand one significant cut in return. Put all the onus on the Dems. If they want to shut down the government because they refuse to make a single significant cut, then the whole voting public will see who they truly are. Repeat this process every 30 or 60 days from now until the 2012 elections.

Boner told Obama he would let the Bush tax cuts expire

I don't think that's true, but even if it were, who cares if Republicans promise to let the Bush tax cuts expire? They expire at the end of 2012. So does Obama. So does Harry Reid's majority in the Senate. Come January 2013, it'll be Morning in America and new tax laws can be passed and signed without need for approval from Democrats.

” Trillions in more spending, white house promises to buy one less role of toilet paper next year, said they would steal one from congress to make up the drastic cuts. “

You don’t know how close to the truth you really are.

Obama is a criminal street thug. He will spend whatever the hell he wants to. Look at how he treats our laws and constitution.

He just needs to pass a plan and let the cards fall.

Let Soebarkah veto and then go on vacation. Let Soebarkah veto and tell us to eat peas.

I watched Boehner this morning. My take is he said he would work from cut, cap, and balance.

... which for me is less than half a loaf.

The marxist in the WH and his comrades in the Congress and press know exactly what they are dealing with in Boehner.

A spineless Washingtonian that would cut a deal in a NY minute to stab taxpayers in the back if he could bring the votes.

Since he cant, he is out there still talking about 800 billion dollars in new taxes as some kind of viable option down the road, just not now.

He still doesn't get it.

NO NEW TAXES.

If the people want new taxes they can put the marxists back in charge of the House in 2012.

Why are you dodging the 2% SS tax rate cut and its expiration?

WE don’t really know do we? I mean, he says NO TAX HIKES, yet we now hear of 800$ billion in new taxes.

I am sixk to death of these bast*rds. TErm limits is the only long term solution. I don’t care if it gives presidency more power, in the long run it will cut down this mediocrity.

We have a welfare state esp in the simple employment of gov’t employees whom you can’t get rid of.

He had Obama beat... He could simply put the plan he wants and walk away. The gov’t will fun, but will need to cut back.

And guess what, we may find that we don’t need all these govt programs.

“Debt increase now, spending cuts that are NEVER enacted. We have been down this road before.”

You are absolutely right. The government is addicited to spending and will find new and creative ways to keep on buying votes. We must break this mentality before it destroys what’s left of this country.

Gotta love the Charlies Browns on this thread. Oh sure, they hope and pray Lucy will actually hold the ball, at least this time, right? LOL

Look fellas, I suggest you spend more time learning about the underlying economics of the situation, and less time on the X & Os. (Um, that would be the false R & D dichotomy.)

Since the federal government has taken over the US economy, government growth = GDP growth, get it? Enact a debt ceiling, and you restrict the fed.gov's ability to expand.

Good thing, right? Yeah, for those willing to usher in the greatest Depression, along with a complete collapse of gov't at all levels. But what about those employed and fully invested in the gov't command & control structure? Think they're gonna vote to cut their own throats? Suuuuuure.

The ceiling WILL be raised, and will continue to be raised, in small increments if need be, simply to keep the Ponzi going. We're done, toast, finito - the only thing letting us stagger onward is the Fed's ability to print FRNs in exchange for worthless treasuries.

Once you understand that calculus, all the rest is just a kabuki farce.

They don’t know what the word CUT means. That was evident in the recent CR Deal. They only know how to SPEND. And that is the reason most have to be voted out. They are incapable of making serious cuts to save our country.

Watching Boehner this morning on FNC does not leave me confident in the outcome.

With all due respect, you did not have to watch Fox News to come to that conclusion. The recent CR Deal tells u everything u need to know about Boneheads Deal Skills.

Why are you so gung ho for taxes to be raised by Obama-Bohener?

Why punish the productive members of society and reward the Obama-voting non-producers?

“There is a serious problem in carrying over the leadership which presided over defensive or even passive minority status, and expecting them to perform aggressively and forcefully when the initiative is of right on their side... Majority leaders should be Alpha Wolves, not greeting card puppies.”

A most excellent post in its entirety. Boehner is a worrier, not a warrior.

Remeber TARP.

We were told....if we don't pass TARP in the next 3 days we will find ourselves in the 16th century. Remember they had not even drafted the bill. Remember Nancy telling us we have to pass the bill to know what is in it.

Now they tell us we have to agree to a bill or the framework of a bill by the time the Asian markets open at 6 pm EST. We have to pass this bill to know what is in it. If we do not do this we will default. That is not true. We can service the debt. SS will be paid. Medicare will be paid. BUT, we must forge ahead without even knowing what is going to be in a bill.

Remember Obamacare - huge bill. Now we have the notion of a "Grand Bargain" - a huge bill - and sugarplums dancing in Obamas head so his name will be written in infamy.

We are being played like saps for these leftist endure. When will conservatives learn?
