He seemed to have delusions of being part of some sort of Crusader army, but by all indications in the notes, he was trying to create it himself. He has notes describing how to create uniforms and insignias, orders, etc. Kind of a reverse conspiracy theorist where he wanted to be the head of the conspiracy or at least part of it. Almost a Foucault’s Pendulum scenario where he goes in search of one conspiracy and ends up creating his own in the process. Seems he got really caught up in some grandiose type schizophrenia based myth.
