The Norwegian police on Saturday charged a 32-year-old man, whom they identified as a Christian fundamentalist with right-wing connections, over the bombing of a government center here and a shooting attack on a nearby island that together left at least 91 people dead. Multimedia

SCANPIX, via Associated Press Deadly explosions shattered windows on Friday at the government headquarters in Oslo, which includes the prime ministers office. A spokeswoman for Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg said he was safe. More Photos » The police said they did not know if the man, identified in the Norwegian press as Anders Behring Breivik, was part of a larger conspiracy. He is being questioned under the countrys terrorism laws and is cooperating with the investigation, they said.
We are not sure whether he was alone or had help, a police official, Roger Andresen, said at a televised press conference, adding: What we know is that he is right-wing and a Christian fundamentalist. So far Mr. Breivik has not been linked to any anti-jihadist groups, he said.

Source says 6 tona were delivered, and three were used in this blast. Three remain at his farm. What I first posted was the available info from way earlier this AM by wire. Been on the phone since 5 AM my time trying to get the straight dope from people who know stuff and things from the inside.
This guy is as “christian” as how we would see the christian identity groups here in the US...which is to say, not at all...a perversion.
He has confessed to doing “some shooting”. Also, the fact that he belonged to a “gun club” has been made much of in the press, but in Norway, belonging to a gun club is a prequisite for owning more than a certain number of firearms and to own machine guns requires not only that you belong to a gun club, but you have to be registered and certified, if that’s the right word, as a marksman. I know quite a few who are authorized for these weapons. So it isn’t unusual at all.
Google maps estimates 36-48 minutes to drive just to the ferry from Oslo. So from the map, it looks like it’s just over 1000 feet off the coast. The ferry couldn’t have been more than 5 or 10 minutes.
That gives him anywhere from 40-60 minutes from the time the bombs went off. Theoretically, plenty of time for him to do this all himself, but I have read an article that states that there was shooting coming from two separate places on the island at the exact same time. It appears that Breivik had an accomplice. I wonder if this person could be among those that had been at the camp as campers and was then evacuated out as a victim.
Do you mean that possibly Islamists might get a right winger to go along with a violent attack against lefties because the Islamists don’t care which party dies since all of them are Western Infidels?
It’s far more likely it’s just a bad eyewitness report from someone under incredible stress and confusion.
dirtboy summed up the situation well in another thread, so I’m reposting here:
When Muslims engage in terrorism, we are told to not judge all Muslims by the actions of a few.
When right-wingers engage in terrorism, we are told it is an indictment of all conservatives.
And when left-wingers engage in terrorism, they later become educational consultants and friends of Democratic political bosses, with all forgiven (Ayers).
If you could call this guy a right winger. Except that he really isn’t. What is interesting is his sympathy for the iranian shia muslims. And why is that? Because they are NOT arabs. They are “white” aryans. Yaelle, think about it.
Thank you for the clarification. I knew there was something that was different and you explained it well for me.
Yes, I understand how these witness statements can be incorrect in the beginning. I wonder if the shots heard from two separate places could be echoes, given the topography of this island and its proximity to the coast.
In an unarmed camp of children like this, and all the time this evil bastard had, he had no one to stop him or slow him down. These poor kids were fish in a barrel.
Horrible, just horrible.
I expect to hear calls for that here at the first of the week.

At least two terrorists behind Norwegian youth camp massacre - witnesses
From the article:
Several young people who survived Utoya’s massacre, told VG paper that the shootings were coming from “two different places on the island at the same time.”
“I believe that there were two people who were shooting,” VG quoted a 23-year old Alexander Stavdal.
Norwegian police arrested on Friday a 32-year-old ethnic Norwegian, Anders Behring Breivik, who is believed to be behind the attack.
The witnesses described the second man as a 180-centimeter tall, dark-haired man with Nordic appearance with “a pistol in his right hand and a rifle on his back.””
I have to disagree with you. Most people don’t read these stories in depth. 95% look at the title, give the article a quick glance, and move along. It is amazing how many people read the title and take it at face value.
I posted an article on FR a few years ago entitled “Motorist Tazed for Speeding”. Most people thought that the cop was in the wrong and should’ve been fired for tazing the guy “just for speeding”. They didn’t seem to understand that jamming your hands in your pockets, turning back toward your car, and telling the cop “screw this, I’m done” is the #1 stupid thing you can do on a traffic stop, if the cop is wrong or not.
Bottom line: most posters reacted emotionally and their opinion was completely colored by the title of the article, which most of them obviously didn’t bother to read. And this is FR people. How do you think Grandma Edna is going to react?
I read that article, too. We’ll see in the next few days whether this was the case or not.
I have the ‘first clue’ and yes, he likely attacked it because it was a communist indoctrination camp.
If you followed my posts that’s all I’ve been saying, wiseass.
Uh huh? Well, truth hurts I guess and I didn’t propose anything. “only” less than 100 this time. Next time?
The NYT has scrubbed the original article and replaced it with this title:
“Norway Charges Suspect in Killings”
What is going on here, the AP just did the same thing on another article.
Have they been caught in false reporting and had to scrub something? Or is Nappy playing happy with the news?
The “terrorist mold” is quite simple in that until now, most terrorists were from the Middle East and Muslim.
People are really desperately stretching this Shia thing - basically all he said is that he thought the Wahabists and Sunni extremists were far worse and more dangerous.
No it’s not truth. You’re one of life’s worriers. You imagine the worst, then pass on that worry to others. Some of the most draconian controls we have on us are because people like that got too much power.
What do you expect to get out of it? The thrill of being right? Even if your worry were reality, how would it help anyone? Don’t live by fear. And if you can’t help yourself from fear, don’t drag everyone else down with you.
