Bingo: the military is the “cheapest” in that they will pay him to learn, and hold him to the higher standard. Look at all the services: the Air Force seemed to have a terrific program but as I recall they required a five or six year commitment. As an Army guy, I'd tell him to look at the Army program and keep in mind that the Signal Corps has many terrific avenues to pursue this both as an NCO, Warrant or Commissioned officer. As an aside, it won't hurt to have a few years of real world experience and also the veterans preference and GI Bill benefits. If your son falls into the “white/male” category, veterans preference often makes the difference between getting a job and falling victim to a quota.
