I saw an interesting cable show that theorized that the Great Lakes with the exception of Superior were developed as eroded river beds. They found evidence of Indian villages well out into lake Huron

How the earth was made. The theory is that glaciers followed ancient river valleys. Lake Superior and Ontario are unrelated lakes and are much older. (both were originally formed in ancient rift valleys) Obviously glaciers helped form all the lakes.
