The other thing interesting about that is that scorpions don’t drown very easily....I’m not sure if the could drown at all unless they are underwater for like several days....

I see McConnell’s plan as the usual “lets come up with some comprehensive, we can’t be blamed, plan”. It’s similar to the senate running on unanimous consent. Everthing gets through and nobody’s on the record. And if we have to vote on something, everybody has to agree to the process and we have to know the outcome before we even decide to vote.

It’s gutless. You can just see worthless people like Lugar and McCain and Murkowski and their like helping to come up with this convoluted, avoid responsibility, making real decisions is just too damn hard, don’t rock the boat, let’s all just get along, let somebody else do it, plan.

I like Newts idea 100 billion at a time..Send the bill up to the senate ..the house has done its job..This way all the pressure is on the Senate and not the GOP...

Right. The senate is not a normal-thinking body. And for years, the powers that be have prevented normal-thinking people from getting in there. But those days are coming to an end and there are people there now that are rocking the boat. We need more of them.

It confused me too. Reminds me of those stupid local ballot initiatives phrased as a double-negative so that if you vote “no” you are actually saying “yes”.

Anything, and I mean anything that gives more power to Obama is a very bad idea.

I think this is a stupid ploy by McConnell. Here’s why. I want government cut. This guarantees there will be no cut in government until at least after the election. McConnell is doing this to try to gain some type of advantage in the elections for the GOP. It won’t work. Conservatives aren’t going to support the GOP, and many will stay home. What’s the GOP pitch to conservatives? Vote for us, and we’ll cut government! The response is: No, you won’t. We gave you control of the House, and you did nothing. In fact, when you had a chance to fight, you surrendered.

Does anyone really think a Romney-McConnell-Boehner government is going to cut the size of government? For that matter, that a McConnell-led RINO Senate is going to cut government, no matter who the President is? If these guys want my vote in 2012, they need to earn it. Show me you are serious about spending now. Not some too-clever-by-half political ju-jitsu which probably won’t work.

Makes my point even more.

Toss the debt-ceiling controls in the Obama’s hands so he gets the blame? “I won’t sting you while you carry me across the river!” “Only please, Brer Fox, please don’t throw me into the briar patch!” His fundamental axioms are not those of conservatives. Destroying his enemies is an imperative; he’ll find a way thru the consequences. Increased spending is an imperative; so long as the credit card is accepted he’s good to go, and making the credit limit his decision is an unlimited license to spend (he’ll talk his way thru any caveats). Default? he’s happy to find ANY means to delay that by even a day.

Shut it down.
Shutdown will retain essential services & obligations - which is exactly where we want to be.
Nothing need be passed to achieve our goals fully.

The Constitution gives Congress the sole role in raising and keeping an army and navy. Obozo has no authority to act against that.

You have pinpointed something here which is that the McConnell proposal is unconstitutional on its face. It’s not just defense. The Constitution gives Congress the sole authority for funding everything. This issue of giving away the legislature’s authority over to the executive has been litigated before, even in recent times, and the USSC has always said that that is unconstitutional.

I know the notion of a Constitution is sort of quaint nowadays. So we have to take it for what it’s worth, and today that might not be much. But you are right. Neither in defense nor in any other matters, can Congress punt its appropriation duties to the executive branch.....

Reminds me of a mother, who after arguing with her teenager for hours, throws up her hands and says....okay, do whatever you want to do but just don’t come running to me when it all falls apart.

“So McConnell better HOPE that Obama kills his reaching out here”

Exactly. So what will happen if Barry comes out today and says he accepts McConnell’s proposal?

We are back on defense and fumbling this away.

That’s definitely a fear that I have. Then, it pits GOP conservatives against a combined McConnell/Obama alliance.

THAT ONLY ENSURES OBAMA IS RE-ELECTED AND THE GOP LOSES 2010 CONGRESSIONAL GAINS.

Well, the panic yesterday on FR certainly was a sight to behold but this is probably all moot anyway.

No way Obama accepts this offer. It's a beartrap for a pathological liar and someone that avoids personal responsibility at all costs.

Too bad.

“No way Obama accepts this offer.”

Don’t be so sure. He can always agree in principle and then back out later. Barry will just start his jive again and stand back while Republicans flounder around.

The issue right now should be how unseriously Barry has been negotiating. $2 billion in cuts? Pathetic. But he will lie his way out of that because the Republicans never demanded a current scorable budget proposal.

Instead we will get an avalanche of “the Republicans are controlled by Tea Party extremists” for at least a couple weeks. Get ready for it.

Some on FR do need to sober up before posting.

McConnell was on with Laura Ingraham a little bit ago; I missed part of it because I lost the stream. The idea is good politically because Obama will have to own the cuts needed to offset new borrowing. He won't be able to demagogue.

However, she didn't get around to asking whether his plan could pass constitutional muster or get hung up on ceding too much legislative authority to the executive. No doubt someone would sue (Bachmann? DeMint?) to cause chaos.

This is definitely a strategy to get Republicans out of the Newt government shutdown trap.

It's maddening but they only have the House and limited access to get their message out compared to Obama who can strut out daily and drop scare bombs over-and-over.

Free Republic used to be a place where I went for inspiration and insight. This thread is a great example of why I despair for the future of conservatism, and therefore our country.

We've got posters who don't understand the difference between the federal government and a corporation. We've got posters who think that if the House just says "no" that the problem is solved...there will be no backlash.

Really, is anyone unaware we've been here before? How did that turn out? Did we learn anything?

We've got posters who don't understand that in politics, the shortest distance between two points is not a straight line...and that you have to be in office and in control to do anything.

We've got posters who don't get that McConnell and Boehner live in different worlds...the House can turn on a dime with one election. That's how the Founders planned it. The Senate, because only one third of the members are up for re-election at any given time, doesn't.

Boehner controls the House; McConnell doesn't control the Senate.

Boehner can chart a clearer course. McConnell strategizes with 2012 in mind. He wants RAT senators forced into as many politically embarrassing votes as possible. It's win-win. They both want President Dick forced into no-win situations. We've got an historical opportunity to rack up a big majority in the Senate and increase the majority in the House...and take back the Presidency.

I like Newt's suggestion. Not because it will work; who knows? I like it because it pushes the political consequences for inaction toward President Dick and Harry Reid.

Pass some legislation, send it over to the Senate; let them hold the bomb, if they wish.

I think both Boehner and McConnell have been doing a fantastic job with what we've given them to work with. They've both been a pleasant surprise. Yet, they're being trashed here daily. Some folks need to catch a clue.

Clint Eastwood said it best...a man's gotta know his limitations. As citizens we have to hire and evaluate the help...I wish some of what I assume are my fellow conservatives were a little smarter about it.

And, unlike Otter, I do not believe that...I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part.

Too many of the suggestions I'm seeing sound just like that...political suicide missions.

I think part of the reason Repubs have been out of power is the war on terrorism...people just got tired.

Part of the reason is that the Repubs were not ready for prime time. We gotta be able to play the political game...and we gotta support pols like Boehner and McConnell when they do good.

There are some posters who seem convinced we're all gonna die, and interpret events in the worst possible light. Their Chicken Littleing is not just counterproductive, it's becoming toxic.

Here's an idea. Let's just crown Obama a caesar. Then he'd be accountable for everything.

Great idea, no? Someone get McConnell on the phone.....

We have a constitution for a reason folks. It's to prevent the very kind of consolidation of power that McConnell proposed.

And this is another reason why it's dangerous to have such a pro-big government media. Of course the progressives at the washington compost would support mcconnell's new grow-government-bigger plan!!!
