With compromise talks at a vituperative standstill, Senate Republicans unexpectedly offered Tuesday to hand President Barack Obama new powers to avert a first-ever government default threatened for Aug. 2.
Under a proposal outlined by Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, Obama could request increases of up to $2.5 trillion in the government's borrowing authority in three separate installments over the next year, as long as he simultaneously proposed spending cuts of greater size.

I propose that Congress give up their Constitutional authority and
give President Obama unprecedented power to raise the debt ceiling
by $2.4 trillion in three installments through the end of his term!
No.
[Zero] could request increases of up to $2.5 trillion in the government's borrowing authority in three separate installments over the next year, as long as he simultaneously proposed spending cuts of greater size. This is excellent PR -- not least because Zero won't agree to this anyway.
Assuming there are any male features down there...
Sure wish Mitch would "man-up" for the fight!
If the House passes a 3 trillion or so cut effective immediately, why should we need to raise the debt ceiling at all???
Whassamatter with that dork??? Somebody puleeeze put a sock in his ignorant pie hole and put him in the corner!!
They’re playing “good cop-bad cop”. The point is at the end of the day, they’re both still cops.
Trying to make each other take the blame. Nothing’s going to happen. Political Noh.
Please hold the line! Mr. Mc Connell has not been given the authority by the voters to authorize such a deal. I hope the other Republicans don’t get sucked in and that they hold the line. We want an end to this ‘pass this and then tax to cover it’ type legislation. Back up to a line and hold it. Mitch, you don’t have the right to deal away our savings. Back off and let those negotiating do their job. Back off!
Thing is, each Obamao debt ceiling increase would be subject to a resolution of disapproval in Congress. If the resolution does pass, THE PRESIDENT COULD VETO IT AND ONLY BE STOPPED BY AN OVERRIDE (2/3 in each house)!
Obamao could thus raise the debt ceiling three times without ANY proposed cuts, and face little significant opposition in this divided Congress.
And that, my friends, is why I call the gentleman from Kentucky “B*tch” O’Connell.
Are they out of their f***** minds?
And yes, I mean to be cursing.
If I get the math right, if Obama tries to bump up the debt ceiling (which we would need to do to to not default), then he has to cut -——this years budget by an equal or higher amount, and congress has to approve the cuts (where they are applied).-—— This is the way it needs to be if anything like this goes.
