First Sarah Palin, Now Michele Bachmann
July 12, 2011 12:15 P.M.
By David French

One of the most disgusting political spectacles of my lifetime has been the single-minded effort of the Left to destroy Sarah Palin. Without burdening the readers with a litany of links, we all remember the “not a real woman” comments, the stalking author/neighbor, the hacking scandal, the recent (enthusiastic) fishing expedition through thousands of e-mails, and the vile insults from academics, politicians, and celebrities alike. The goal: to banish her to the fringe of American life, to turn her into a figure of mockery and contempt.

Now, apparently, the Left has decided it’s Michele Bachmann’s turn. Already a hate figure on fringe media outlets like MSNBC, the MSM is piling on. Slate asked if she can be president and still believe in biblical gender roles, ABC News is recycling stories from The Nation about her husband’s counseling centers (where, try as they might, they cannot show a single unethical practice), The Daily Beast gave space to Michelle Goldberg to talk about Bachmann’s alleged “unrivaled extremism,” and the Washington Post’s lifestyle section dedicated several thousand words to a scornful profile of Bachmann’s husband, Marcus.

Why the hate? The secular feminist world view was built around multiple destructive cultural lies: motherhood is a barrier to self-actualization, orthodox religion traps women unhappily in the home, and the only real path to power and happiness is exploding, not upholding, traditional religious values. Yet a mother of five (with 23 foster children), happily married in a Christian family, and who proudly espouses the very traditional values most repugnant to the academic feminist Left is a leading candidate for the most powerful office in the world. She is a living refutation of their foundational beliefs, and — like Sarah Palin — she must be destroyed.

As we enter a primary season where Republican infighting threatens to reach a crescendo, I hope we can learn a lesson from Sarah Palin’s ordeal. You may or may not support Michele Bachmann for president, but we can (and should) defend her against the coming ideological onslaught, an onslaught that is aimed at her but whose real targets are the core values that govern many of our lives.

I would agree that it is outrageous the treatment Bachmann and esp. Palin get in the media. I also hear crickets in defending these great women. With that said Palin has my vote. Bachman is needed in Congress.

They have not destroyed Gov. Sarah Palin, they have made her stronger and more powerful than she ever could’ve been otherwise. Yet, they do not realize it.

I reject the author's premise. The time to defend Bachmann is if she somehow wins the nomination. If she can't defend herself during the primaries, then she has no business running for President.

Sounds like NRO wants conservatives to come to Bachmann's aid NOW to save her so that she can continue to be the establishment's tool to stop Sarah from running. Sorry, not falling for this.

Where did you get that from this blog posting? Or is it just a narrative your pushing that you’ll attach to anything Bachmann related?

Not only that, but Palin completely controls the narrative and decision-making. That excellent Newsweek cover story didn't happen because Newsweek suddenly decided to be fair and objective.

Bachmann and the other GOP candidates will continue to crawl to Meet the Press and other media dinosaurs while Palin can simply give a speech somewhere and have 10,000 people show up, or write a Facebook note, Tweet, or have C4P do reports on her.

A while ago I mistakenly hit “Reply all” instead of “Reply” on an email and since then have been bombarded by hate mail from a liberal that makes Nancy Pelosi look like Jeane Kirkpatrick. The Left is criminally insane. This being understood, their actions lose their mystery and what you have to do is revealed.

We need to classify this leftist strategy as the ‘Clarence Thomas Treatment’ or something similar. While conservative women are primary target today, the fact is the leftists and media will pull out every possible weapon to destroy any woman or minority who happens to be a conservative. Their lifeblood is the loosely-knit partnership of various gender and ethnic special interest groups, and anything that threatens that coalition is to be destroyed at all costs. I like associating it with Thomas rather than Palin because it takes the passions of recent skirmishes out of the discussion. Most every American is aware of the Thomas USSC hearings circus.

One of my best indicators of Obama’s radicalism was the event at Saddleback during 2008 where he singled out Thomas as the worst supreme court justice. While his record is nearly identical to the usually maligned Scalia, and the two recent Bush appointees who he voted on, he singled out the conservative black Justice in very sharp statements. It was very instructive about Obama and the far left movement.

You obviously have no clue as to what's going on. If Bachmann is being attacked right now that's her problem and she should defend herself rather than having NRO issue a desperate SOS for conservatives to save her so she can stay in the race and continue to be a tool.

Then ,of course, we should do nothing to defend Palin who not only has not won the nomination but isn't even a candidate.

I honestly don't see any similarity in the level of vitriolic attacks between Bachmann and Palin. The stuff which is happening to Bachmann is pretty much the historical norm for the Left.

Amen. I am not an active Sarah for Pres or Michele supporter. I am not convinced SP will run. BUT I do believe the intense and utter hatred for strong, relatively young conservative women IS no accident.

Like Phyllis Schlafly in the last generation, the liberals KNOW the power and respect a woman who is conservative can command. I would LOVE to see a cabal of conservative women go after their attackers.

Star Parker, Michelle Malkin, M.K. Ham, and a whole host of others I am probably forgetting at the moment, ought to form some kind of alliance and make a stand for their politics. Of course they won’t agree on everything—but seeing as the media will stop at NOTHING to destroy any one of them who begins to make headway, it would behoove them to stand together.

If that is the case, you shouldn't have to foam at the mouth and tell the most outrageous lies about Bachmann.

But, you have an irrational hatred of her because you're apparently insecure about your own candidate, despite what you're claiming.

It's pathetic. Bachmann is 100% lifetime conservative, according to the ACU, and has been out standing on principle more than any other candidate presently running. It's petty and ridiculous to continue to attack someone that is advancing conservative principles and going after Obama.

Palin doesn't need defending. What's been said about her has already been said and she'll just ignore the media and go directly to the people.

And, of course, you agree with this completely? You must, because I've seen you all over FR defending Governor Palin from attacks on so many threads. < /sarc> Alternatively, if you do agree that we should all rush to defend Rep. Bachmann, is it because you see her as less capable of self-defense than is Governor Palin?

I disagree, triple E. I think the author is saying the attacks on a strong conservative woman are part of a slanderous mindset that must be resisted and attacked with ferocity. I agree....we saw under George W Bush what happens when you adopt a “new tone”. You get eaten alive.

I have no clue? You’re the one claming things you have ZERO proof of. You say if Bachmann is being attacked that’s her problem. OK, so then does that same standard apply for Palin? Because she certainly had/has plenty of defenders on talk radio, blogs, Fox News etc. Are the attacks against Palin her problem too?

If that is the case, you shouldn't have to foam at the mouth and tell the most outrageous lies about Bachmann.

Saying that Bachmann doesn't have executive experience or notable legislative accomplishments aren't "outrageous lies." Neither is her hiring Ed Rollins and not condemning his attacks Palin rather than one of the declared candidates. Simply proof that she is in the presidential race for ego and beltway name recognition rather than what's good for the nation, while exploiting the Tea Party movement.

But, you have an irrational hatred of her because you're apparently insecure about your own candidate, despite what you're claiming.

I don't hate Bachmann. I do have a fear that she is another Huckabee who is going to siphon away Christian voters, which will split the conservative vote and we get Romney/Pawlenty/Huntsman as the nominee.

It's pathetic. Bachmann is 100% lifetime conservative, according to the ACU, and has been out standing on principle more than any other candidate presently running.

Good for her, she can stay in Congress then or run for Senate. She could have ran for Governor in '10. Legislators simply don't get elected to the WH by Republican voters.

It's petty and ridiculous to continue to attack someone that is advancing conservative principles and going after Obama.

We already have someone who is attacking Obama. (actually, who has attacked him since August of 2008) Quite effectively I might add and without her message getting filtered through the liberal media. Let Bachmann focus on legislative priorities such as repealing Obamacare and leave the presidential race to someone who knows what she's doing.
