Growing up black in the segregated 1960s, Deborah Goldring slept two to a bed, got evicted from apartment after apartment, and watched her stepfather climb utility poles to turn their disconnected lights back on. Yet Goldring pulled herself out of poverty and earned a middle-class life until the Great Recession.
First, Goldring's husband fell ill, and they drained savings to pay for nursing homes before he died. Then Goldring lost her executive assistant job in the Baltimore hospital where she had worked for 17 years. The cruelest blow was a letter from the bank, intending to foreclose on her home of almost three decades.
Millions of Americans endured similar financial calamities in the recession. But for Goldring and many others in the black community, where unemployment is still rising, job loss has knocked them out of the middle class and back into poverty. Some even see a historic reversal of hard-won economic gains that took black people decades to achieve.
Goldring remembers her mother taping the blinds to the wall so no one could see them stealing electricity. She remembers each time she sat on the curb with her three brothers, surrounded by her family's belongings, waiting for a new place to live. Sitting on those curbs, she promised to always pay her bills on time.

So she grew up poor in the 60s and slept two to a bed. My wife grew up poor in the 50s/60s, lived in the country in houses that had no running water, one light bulb and slept with her twin sister. She didn’t live in a house with an indoor toilet until she was 15. She doesn’t blame anyone for having to live that way and it certainly made her a better person who is able to work hard and do the right things to maintain a standard of living. The poor blacks in the nearest big city lived better than her family did.
Everybody is adversely affected by the nazi socialist democrat party so if you voted democrat you have nobody to blame but yourself. Nobody cares about your sniveling, whining excuses for why you don’t succeed and you certainly don’t deserve a comfortable life at the taxpayer’s expense just because of your skin color.
Quit voting for the democrat party of slavery if you want things to get better.
No doubt there are FReepers who could tell you from their own experience.
I would add that if we were ever able to somehow move black support for the Democrat party from the 80-90% level down to even 60% support for the Democrat party, that would make ALL the difference in the world for the future of the country.
It would be the difference between a future of a prosperous and free country versus a country in permanent economic depression and decline.
My dad shared a bed with his older brother and was reared in a house his uncle built for something like $6000. In retrospect, it was a dinky house (although not compared to my family’s expensive but crummy manufactured home), but I don’t think my grandparents paid a >30 year mortgage on theirs, ever. It’s very likely that blacks have fared worse in general than the rest of the population given the current unemployment rates among blacks at a time when Jim Crow laws have long been replaced with legal protections if not preferences and rising minimum wages. Divorce is bad news in part because it’s a worse than zero sum game wealthwise.
no need for the apostrophe.
Obama has hurt us all, why should we single out blacks?
My savings is earning 1.2%, My health Insurance has gone up, gasoline costs me a fortune, it cost me over $2,000 dollars to heat my house last winter,My food bill has gone out of sight and hot dogs are becoming more familiar at my table . A steak that I cut in half and my wife and I share is 11.99 a lb at Sams club, and it aint Wagyu beef either , It's New York Strip. We try to get one a week now. I used to go fishing, but at $30.00 for a can of gasoline for the boat I realize I cannot catch $30,00 dollars worth of fish and haven't put the boat in the creek this year.
Have the blacks been hurt worse than whites by Obama?
Well: They have a higher unemployment rate I give them that, But if Obama stopped Mexicans from taking all of the jobs that might help .
The end result is that we are all hurting, Thanks Mr. Obama. Blacks who are hurting will vote for you again, but I doubt the whites who voted for you last time will be knocking anyone down to get to the front of the line at the polls.
“Davis says he learned skills in prison: “How to cook, clean, horticulture, janitorial. I can do it. I’ve been trained. Tile, carpentry, mortar, edging and trimming, all that. I can operate a backhoe, a roller. Any opportunity to do something that would show my talents, I’d do it. It would be my ticket out the streets.”
You can actually learn more useful skills in prison than in school. That says more about our public schools than anything else.
Remember this?
I didn’t read the article, but everyone I know has had their economic gains wiped out. Asians, Latinos, whites, blacks, Europeans. It’s not exclusive to one race.
Oh yeah, communist hope and change.
Greed or not, that sounds like lack of foresight.
That would be my question. We have been in our house 14 yrs this month. One more year and it is paid for. Of course we never have borrowed a dime on it and it is still worth about $50k more than we paid for it.
Could it be (Satan)? Old Saturday Night live skit.
The obvious solution is more socialism.
“Its not exclusive to one race.”
You’re right, but the irony in it for blacks...
Those quilts on the floor were called pallets....and I have slept on many of them.
You refinance it over-and-over again to cash out.
Cry me a river.
There are White folks that started out poor too. There are White folks that have lost their jobs and everything else... THANKS to the Blacks helping to put that bastard, Obama, in office.
Better yet, go cry to your Magic Negro.
