I’m unclear on the upshot here. It sounds like Boehner is agreeing to raise the debt ceiling. If he’s negotiated spending cuts, why does he have to raise the ceiling?

The cuts are likely spread out over 10 years in the future, so that they can be altered, disregarded, or forgotten when the time comes to actually save money.

This whole debt reduction talk is just a big dog and pony show. As far as real cuts, if they don't cut current appropriations, it's nothing more than a mirage.

The "comprehensive" deal was spread out over 10 years. That rather nullifies any changes in depreciation (in case folks didn't notice that ~ but it takes away Democrat demands on what they called "oil subsidies" ~ with very low discount rates due to low interest rates changing depreciation schedules makes little difference to the companies or the treasury beyond a small change for one year)

Boehner walked away from a comprehensive plan that cut $4 trillion.

That takes us to what is left ~ that's $2 trillion out of the current spending levels PLUS next fiscal year.

In short, Boehner may be calling Obama's bluff or, in effect, telling him he can come across or be ignored. I think that's because Boehner has his majority vote standing in the wings in the Senate as well. Remember, fiscal matters take a majority, not a super majority!

It's no longer about Ryan's budget ~ it's about that plan as a basic outline LESS the amount out of this year's budget to avoid letting Obama cut Social Security payments (which he's indicated he will do if he doesn't get new taxes).

It’s as if nobody in DC can read a balance sheet. You can just listen to most of the politicians, and tell they have lower than average IQs. When I first saw Barney Frank mocking, bullying and belittling Bush’s Fanny and Freddy inspectors (who were trying to sound the alarm), I thought Frank must have known deep down there was a problem. Turns out he was clueless. How must stupid does that take??? Now Holder is doing the same d@mn thing all over again, that caused the Fanny Freddie meltdown. I know it’s mostly ideology, but still, there are more than a few sacks of hammers in that town.
