Maryland Immigrant Tuition Plan Seems Headed For 2012 Vote
By BRIAN WITTE Associated Press
Updated: Thursday, 07 Jul 2011, 9:55 PM EDT
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Opponents of a recently approved measure that would allow certain illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition at Maryland colleges have collected enough signatures to put the matter before state voters in November 2012, officials said Thursday.
The Maryland State Board of Elections board reported that 63,118 signatures had been validated. A total of 55,736 signatures is needed to put the measure on the ballot for voters to decide in November 2012. About 40,000 signatures remain to be verified.
"It's going on the ballot, and the local boards will continue the verification process of the remaining signatures," said Mary Wagner, the state board's director of voter registration. "The local boards will continue the verification process and then we will certify on July 22."
The bill was signed by Gov. Martin O'Malley in May. It was scheduled to take effect July 1, but it has been delayed from taking effect because of the petition drive.

College tuition? Shouldn't Maryland buy them a house first?
To: Libloather
Maybe the good people of Maryland wait to see how it works out for Connecticut, since Gov. Malloy just signed the bill yesterday. The funny thing is he says it will not effect any residents trying to get into college. But maybe if the classroom only fits 25 students, how many will be illegal? One more question, wonder if they have to speak English?

As soon as they declare they are “illegal” deport them.

Someday Texas, too, will stop subsidizing Illegals in college - but we’ll likely need a new governor first.

” College tuition? Shouldn’t Maryland buy them a house first? “
Good joke, but the sad truth is that America has lost its collective marbles. And we already bought them a house with a sub-prime mortgage.

Getting this on the ballot will bring out larger numbers of conservative voters, lots of people are very angry at the democrat high-handedness on tax giveaways like this
the dems will not allow a popular vote to happen
Maryland is a thugocracy :-(

One of the leading politicians for this referendum lives in Washington County where you can practically touch West Virginia and Pennsylvania from his house. Out of state tuitions apply for any one wishing to go to a school across these very close borders, but our gov - who has national aspirations - wants people crossing our national borders without permission to pay "in-state" tuitions if they live in Maryland.
Foreign students who cross our borders with permission in order to attend Maryland schools also pay the high "out-of-state" tuition.
Anything wrong with this picture?

Glad to see that the people of Maryland are going to have a say in this. After all, they are the ones who will be paying for it through their tax dollars.

OMG! “Malloy”? That’s way too close to “O’Malley”! LOL
I lived in Norwich a couple years; the place was pretty heavy with illegals. I was shocked, out there. MD not so much - then. But now it is.

Then tell me were is your Allegiance? Are you offended for me asking? My Great Grand Parents came here from Spain and were not very welcomed by the European immigrants. This is not the same as sneaking into a country and saying, "tell me I'm less American then you are." Hey ah, by the way, you have an ss?
