Students, staff to receive laptops

It’s been in the works for over a year, but the technology plan tailored by Owensboro Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Larry Vick is nearing a major milestone, with more than 150 teachers and more than 2,200 students slated to receive laptops that will make critical learning possible.

When first proposed by Vick, the $5 million plan called not only for the purchase and use of technology by teachers and students, but a complete rethinking of how education happens. About $3.3 million in stimulus funds went to help create a new digital curriculum and then train faculty and staff on how to most effectively use technology to benefit students.

Vick said the reason behind all this is to prepare students for the wave of the future. Technology is an ever-expanding part of business and commerce in today’s world, Vick said. Teaching students how to make good use of technology prepares them for that and boosts their chances of success.

ever notice in the movies or tv shows it's always mac? The left/commies luv apple. Since so called educators don't live in the real world (see movies & tv shows) they will obviously go for the mac. The costs of product, support, etc isn't a metric because the money is free- hoorayyy!

All that stuff that Socrates taught Plato who then taught Aristotle? Complete crap without an iMac. Just toss all of it on the scrapheap of history.

“critical learning” went on in the library, whereas “critical thinking” happened down at the corner tavern over a pitcher of suds. (ah, what beautiful memories)

Laptop in the classroom at the college leve-lots of texting,
reading and watching porn (probably more interesting than some anti-male, anti-white, anti-American, anti-free enterprise lecture by a leftwing moonbat humanities professor).

Form the article, it seems as though $3.3 million went into the creation of the curriculum and training, and the $2.3 million is for the computers. With the quantity quoted and assuming 25 spares, the cost per unit is more like $933.

I always knew when my dad’s belt came off, I was about to be a recipient of some “critical learning”. It was critical to learn what did and did not cause that belt to be removed.

Difference - but not meaningful difference.

I’ve been running $400 laptops for 7 years. My 99%ile and 95%ile sons had no trouble learning using them.

And I would imagine they just might have some purchasing power - buying 2,000 at a time.

Whether it is Apple - or somebody giving a relative a giant commission check - it is all the same - government giving away what even upper middle class American taxpayers can’t afford.

no belts around the four sons, but one swat of his hand and you would find yourself in the next county

And if he heard that we had disobeyed Mom, or sassed her, we would be eating off the mantelpiece for a week.

That seldom happened though. We had a great, loving family - a military one!

My dad used the belt sparingly...but when he did, you knew you really screwed it up! My mom’s preferred instrument of correction was a hair brush! I hated that one! LOL

My newish desktop unit is $350. (sans $100. monitor). My laptop is a Dell that is about 7 years old.

The boondoggle is the cost of “setting up the curriculum”. And I don’t approve of providing computers for everyone.

Yes, public education is a scam. My father once told me that and he’s been dead for 30 years.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

1) I'd love to have a definition of what these Marxists consider “critical” learning. Geeze! When I went to school it was just called, “learning”.

2) How on earth did my children, my husband and I, my parents, and other generations manage to learn without personal computers? Amazing! Some of our earlier Americans didn't use very much paper. It was too expensive. They used slates.

I’m not familiar either, but I went to a community meeting with the Principal of the new High School that was just built near me and he raved about getting all 850 students new Apple laptops. I probably should have spoken up at the time, but it seemed like a done deal. I figured the laptops were probably on the way as we spoke. We have another meeting this Thursday and I definitely will say something since I read this article. I remember this same thing from years ago. It seems that Apple has only lost market share since then. I’d better check my stats before I make a complete idiot of myself in front of the whole County, huh? I don’t mind being a partial idiot, but a complete idiot....I’d like for no one to know that about me...smile.

Forget my last comment (I’ll leave it in here for comedic relief.) I just looked up Apple’s market share. It’s almost a whopping 10%...WOW!!! It indeed is growing. I’m surprised at that. Up from 4% in 2006. I bet most of that surge is because of school systems like this one and mine doing wholesale buying with taxpayer money. Every company I deal with through my buisness is PC Compatible. I still believe most if not all industry is PC-Compatible so for that reason and for the sake of my business, I will still “suffer” with the Windows platform and suggest that Students use PC Compats. Plus I’m too old to change now.

Plus the price of PC Compatibles when buying a large quantity seems to be about a quarter to a third of the price of Apples depending on where you get them.
