DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- Police said a man who told Channel 2 Action News that he was a robbery victim is actually the robber.
DeKalb County police arrested Mahad Said and charged him with robbery one day after Said claimed a gunman robbed him.
The real victim, Hashim Fannin, told Channel 2's Tom Jones that Said is one dumb criminal.
"Since he went out and made this report, and went on television and all of that, that made it pretty easy to track him down," Fannin said.
Said had said that a man he met on Craigslist tried to rob him of the smartphone he was trying to sell at the QuikTrip on Lawrenceville Highway in Decatur. He said when he sped away, the gunman chased him and pointed an AR-15 rifle at him. A visibly shaken Said said: "Anybody would be shaken if they got out and saw a rifle pointed at them."
Said said the gunman heard sirens and sped off.
Now, police said that was an elaborate lie.
Officers said Said was the person doing the robbing, and Fannin is the real victim.
Fannin said he was the one who met Said at the QuikTrip to sell an iPhone 4. He said that's when Said snatched the phone and drove off with another man. Fannin gave chase. He said the second man jumped out and ran, police said.
Then he caught up with Said and pointed this an AR-15 rifle at him.
"Basically, kind of gave him some encouragement to return my phone," Fannin said.

Fannin said he has a concealed carry permit, and police say he did nothing illegal.
Gee, does Crossbreed make a supertuck holster for concealing an AR-15?
By having a concealed carry permit he has obviously had a back ground check. An AR-15 does not require a concealed carry permit because you don’t need one to have it in your car. I’m glad the police are sensible here.
“Mahad Said?” “Hashim Fannin?” What in the world is going on back east?
