A relative of Dantzler said he was recently released from prison and very distraught.

A Michigan State Police helicopter is now involved and is focusing their search along the I-96 corridor. Authorities believe he may be headed toward Detroit, where he has some connections.

"officers believe they have the suspect surrounded but warned residents to stay in their homes."

They believe of the seven dead, five are women, one a man and one a child.

A civilian bystander was hit by gunfire as the police chased the suspect, at high speed, through downtown Grand Rapids.

CNN has the story up. It will come as a surprise to no one that they have omitted any physical description of Dantzler other than this: "Police describe Dantzler as 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighing 250 pounds."

Of course that's not literally true. The police provided some other, more specific, characteristics of Dantzler's appearance. For some reason CNN has chosen to avert its eyes.

Grand Valley State University Associate Professor Christopher Kierkus says that Dantzler falls into a subcategory of mass murderers known as "family annihilators."

Professor Kierkus, who specializes in the study of mass murderers and serial killers, elaborated somewhat as follows: "the name says it all."
