Next month, four enormous steel skeletons, the last of the 12 segments of the bridge, will be shipped 6,500 miles from Shanghai to San Francisco before being assembled on site. The bridge, which will connect San Francisco to Oakland on the other side of the bay, is a sign of how China has moved on from building roads and ports in Africa and the developing world and is now aggressively bidding for, and winning, major construction and engineering projects in the United States and Europe. After building forests of skyscrapers in Beijing and Shanghai, showpiece buildings like the Bird's Nest stadium and the Guangzhou Opera House, and a high-speed rail network that is the envy of the world, Chinese construction companies are flush with cash and confidence. This week, Wen Jiabao, the Chinese premier, lobbied David Cameron to give the contract for the UK's new high speed rail link to a Chinese company. According to Engineering News Record, five of the world's top 10 contractors, in terms of revenue, are now Chinese, with likes of China State Construction Engineering Group (CSCEC) overtaking established American giants like Bechtel.

“Made in China”. What could possibly go wrong?
I guess this wasn’t one of those shovel-ready projects either.
I heard this morning that 60% of all the steel for this POS has been rejected upon first inspection. I wonder how long until the bridge falls down.
Is there a website anywhere you can bet on the odds how long it lasts? I like betting on sure things...
Confucius say: Man who buy bridge made in China travel over junk.
I’ll bet money... some Democrat Californian polititian’s “benefactor” is getting rich off this contract by outsourcing the steel to China. Lining his pockets off what should have been american steel jobs.
Several of the bridge pieces already received have been rejected because of flaws in the steel quality, and there is ongoing professional disagreement on the steel quality of some of the accepted and installed pieces.
This would be of no concern if the US had not rid itself of our own steel mills for "environmental" concerns. Our own steel was top notch right up until the end, but we don't make it anymore. Anyway, what could happen?
The replacement bridge could have been built at one twentieth the cost and finished five years ago, if socialist politicians went for the efficient design rather than the pandering artsy fartsy Rube Goldberg clooge they got.
so what is wrong with US steel and concrete??
20 minutes after you cross it, you’ll want to do it again.
As a nation, we’re soooooo screwed!
Bump.
That would be Richard Blum and his wife, Dianne Feinstein, at least in the old days. I hear that China doesn't give him his cut anymore, they don't have to.
You’re correct, much better to give the job to U.S. based union thugs who will eventually funnel the money back the the DNC.
“so what is wrong with US steel and concrete??”
Due to US regulatory requirements,(Notice I didn’t say “wages””?) it is 4x to as much 10 times more expensive to make steel of the same quality in America, than it does to make it in China, and ship it halfway across the planet.
HELLO HOUSTON, WE MIGHT HAVE A PROBLEM!!
(Can ya hear Ross Perot’s Giant Sucking Sound, yet?)
That’s scary ! I usually travel to the Bay Area each year and I go across the Bay Bridge. And WTF, why is the bridge being built in China instead of here in the US employing our workers ?
I doesn’t matter.
With the new taxes proposed in the state budget there soon will be no one in CA to use the bridge.
For anyone still there ... well ... enjoy your chinese bridge.
