Legendary Boston crime boss James "Whitey" Bulger, who has been on the run for more than a decade, was arrested Wednesday in Santa Monica, multiple law enforcement sources told The Times.
Bulger, 81, has been the subject of several books and was the inspiration for "The Departed," a 2006 Martin Scorsese film staring Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Jack Nicholson.
Bulger fled Boston in late 1994 as federal agents were about to arrest him in connection with 21 killings, racketeering and other crimes that spanned the early 1970s to the mid-1980s.
He was arrested by the FBI inside a building without incident, according to the sources, who asked not to be named because they were not authorized to speak on the matter. The details surrounding his arrest were unclear Wednesday night.

yeah here I am on vacay in Steeler nation and this happens. I saw “Whitey captured, you won’t want to miss Howie” on his show’s facebook.
Yeah, I just heard about that yesterday!
Yeah, I just heard about that yesterday! I used to know a kid whose grandfather was murdered by him over Jai alai.
Also, I wonder if Howie Carr was tipped off that the FBI was closing in. It just seems odd that Whitey's capture coincided with a flurry of coverage that Howie suddenly started giving Whitey in recent days. Or maybe the reverse is true. Either way, Howie is going to be the toast of the town.

I know you will be shocked, shocked I tell ya, to hear that yes the corruption still exists, worse then ever and they have no shame - DiMasi - third house speaker in a row to become a convicted felon - dems must be so proud - and some of them are saying they don't believe Sal did anything wrong, just goes to show the lack of morals, ethics and common sense. A state rep Brad Jones has actually filed "ethics" legislation - we know it won't go anywhere because MA is run by dems and they have no ethics and will not be interested in reading let alone passing this legislation. Howie Carr is going to be all over the Whitey arrest - should be a good show!
Wow! Shades of the past...
A lot of folks in Boston are panicking. Especially down at the local office of the FBI.
Saw her pics on TV. There was a big reward. Wonder if that stimulated arrest?
Not really, most of the agents who were involved are either dead/given a pass or in jail (Zip Connolly)
Right, it was Matty Ryan the DA who played handball (not squash) every day with the big guy. Can’t remember the name of his partner but his buddies were Big Nose Sam, Skyball Scibelli and Lou Pardello. Lou, by the way, was the mob guy Bob Cousey allegedly was caught socializing with. They were all ‘related’ to the Raymond Patriarcha family.
“Yeah, I just heard about that yesterday! I used to know a kid whose grandfather was murdered by him over Jai alai.”
Wasn’t that some rich guy murdered in the parking lot of a Tulsa country club?
Speculation here in Boston is that the FBI knew where he was when they started running the ads, have been watching him for a bit - they ran the ads to see if whitey would get word and panic.
Are we sure about that?
Hey! Wazzaproblem here?
Deze tings happen all da tyme.
Dozen’t mean a ting......
:)
Either Howie writes very fast or he has ESP and knew that the FBI was ready to get Whitey.
“You picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.’
I heard Howie on EEI this morning; he’s floating over this!
Special thanks to the Fieldmarshal who pinged the story to me. Thanks!!!
I contemplated calling in sick today, but I came to work. I’ll watch what I can on the interwebs.
I heard it was because all the corrupt FBI thugs who were in with him, were either dead or in prison already. So, they didn’t have anything to lose by actually bringing him in.
I have a law question. The charge against his girlfriend was harboring a fugitive. If they were married would she even be charged? Isn’t it true that under the law one spouse does not have to testify against the other spouse? Thus, if she were his wife instead of girlfriend she would not be harboring a fugitive. Just wondering.
