A few months ago, one of our pyrex mixing bowls simply shattered into thousands of pieces. It was sitting in the cupboard and hadn’t been touched. I couldn’t believe it. When I googled “pyrex bowl shattered,” I found hundreds of stories about tempered glass simply exploding. I’d never even heard of this happening before it happened to us. :/
The answer is simple: it lost its temper.
Ditto. I must have been reading the same website a few years ago. I'm very careful to not place a hot glass dish on a cold counter. But after reading accounts of glass exploding out of the blue, I'm tempted to throw away all my glass baking dishes. My husband is a purist who mistrusts aluminum and other metal, so I think I'll invest in some Le Creuset cookware. I had some once but tossed it because of its weight, but it produced the best pot roasts and chicken soup I've ever had.
