NY gov lobbying senators in gay marriage fight

Gov. Andrew Cuomo is lobbying individual senators in a quest to secure what appears to be one more vote needed to legalize gay marriage in New York and deliver a major win for the national effort.

The Democrat met with three Republican senators in his Capitol office Thursday and plans to meet with more on Friday, the day Senate Republican leader Dean Skelos predicted his house would bring the bill to a floor vote.

The quietly-called meetings come as talks drag on, leading the Senate's Democratic leader to say Republicans are more concerned with protecting their majority.

Some advocates thought a gay marriage law could be enacted as early as Tuesday.

"The meetings are ongoing," said Cuomo spokesman Josh Vlasto, putting no end date to the closed-door sessions.

"I'm still a `no,' I'm still talking to people, so I'll let that speak for itself," said Republican Sen. Andrew Lanza of Staten Island after leaving Cuomo's office Thursday night.

He said he continues to seek further protections for religious groups opposed to gay marriage so they can't be prosecuted for discrimination if they refuse to allow their property or services to be used during gay marriage ceremonies.

1. It’s going to happen anyway.

2. The government should not be involved in this issue.

Concur.

And let’s legalize more drugs, and not just alcohol, nicotine, and white sugar, for the same reasons.

Heterosexual monogamous marriage is the bedrock of human civilization and so-called same-sex marriage will be its undoing. Civil union is nothing but a device to grease the rails for same-sex marriage. The polygamists and beast-boinkers are hopping on this bandwagon and you can be sure they'll be piping up next under the mantra that the government shouldn't be involved. This is one area where the Government should be involved.

Homos should be allowed to marry,

Then of what value is marriage? If homosexuals can marry then why not brothers and sisters or fathers and daughters? Why same sex only? Why not allow a group of swingers to marry maybe 3 husbands and 3 wives all married together? Hey what is stopping polygamists from demanding the same rights and priviledges accorded two person marriages? Why limit it to people?

I suspect your solution is to just refuse to have the government get involved in Family Law altogether. No Marriages, no Divorces, no child custody suits, no adoptions, no family recognition whatsoever.

Hey, this is a conservative forum not a nut-job libertarian forum. And this country was founded on Christian and Jewish customs and laws. If you were a conservative you would want to conserve the foundations that made this country great. But instead you appear to be some kind of anarchist libertarian that wants to destroy the very fabric of our society by denying the basis upon which this nation was founded.

If you want to spew these stupid ideas, I suggest you find a new forum to spew them.

Some of the better-educated slaves in young America probably weren’t entirely impressed with all of the founders’ work, either.

It is a recorded FACT that many if not most of the Founding Fathers deplored slavery, but were forced to compromise in order to insure passage of the Constitution.

Are you somehow suggesting that they would have also supported sodomites "marrying" each other?

Free Republic is pro-family and 100% opposed to the homosexual agenda. If you’re going to lobby for the homosexual agenda I’d appreciate it if you take your business elsewhere.

What does ANY of that have to do with a secular government when the Founders were men of faith? Nothing. You don’t agree with what they built and what it’s based on. So what.

The libertarians who advocate this are typically anarchists who actually welcome the collapse of civilization.

Yes, exactly right.

They are the same ones who think everything was going just fine for the boys in "Lord of the Flies" until the naval officer showed up and ruined everything.

Hate to admit it, sometimes, but I'm on their side, in this one. I want a secular government that makes few demands on, and has little interest in, any religion.

You mean like the USSR? NK? The USSR? Cuba? Pol Pot? Mao?

Take your pick of the secular government or dictator you'd like to live under. There's plenty to choose from.
