Gmail reads all your mail to know what to advertise to you. It’s in the T&Cs that no one reads.
I wouldn’t use GMail if paid to. Really.

Does your ISP provide a free mailbox service with your account?
(e.g., your_id@comcast.net)
I believe that most of them do, or at least they did. For example, using Comcast as our ISP we get 5 free mailboxes with the service.
I also recommend ixquick as a search engine.

I use hotmail for email.
Like others, I use Bing.com for searches - think it has some good features.
