The "miserable failure" kerfuffle was a Google Bomb. It and other google bombs can and are organized by political activists, taking advantage of Google's search ranking algorithm. FR denizens had a try at it as well.
Google might, however, be accused of partisanship in the way it responds to particular Google Bombs, though.
