That is union mentality. Every time a company automates any job, the union requires the company to keep the employees. They even have them sitting around as backups (playing cards) in case they are needed, and they get paid.

To save their longshoreman jobs, the unions prevented the Port of San Francisco from modernizing the equipment to unload container ships. So all the wharfs shut down and moved to Oakland where they installed the latest and much more efficient equipment. The stupidity of unions knows no bounds.
