Where is Joplin, Mississippi (MS)?
Goshen College (it is not “Goshen University”) is not a liberal school. It is a lovely little Mennonite college in Goshen, Indiana, county seat of Elkhart County, which historically has been a bastion of conservatism.
I suppose you can call Mennonites “liberal” when you compare them to the Amish, from whom they broke off a few centuries ago. I wouldn’t confuse “non-violence” with liberalism, as both the Amish and the Mennonites have tried to avoid war for as long as they have existed (they started out in the 16th century as “Anabaptists”). The Mennonites and Amish believe in self-reliance, hard work, personal responsibility and self-restraint, and actually live in fear of the government. I’ve observed these people up close for years (my wife’s family lives in Elkhart County); I don’t hold any brief for their theology, but if people in this country started living according to their moral principles, the country would be vastly improved overnight.
