What the cocktail means, is that this is the signature of a meltdown. We all knew this on by March 13th or so. I was scared shitless for at least two weeks as I studied up on the phenomenon, but finally relaxed at the end of March as I noticed that it was a local incident and had no direct effect on Tokyo. I find this all very interesting and an ironic vindication of nuclear power.

There is much concern over the wider impact. A fair amount of drugs including biopharm and medical devices are produced wholly in or contain material from Japan.

Yes, the isotopes are indicative of a "core meltdown" but much are short lived and can be readily detected. What needs to be understood are the levels of ionizing radiation and the effects on biologics - including longer term through the "food chain".

The Japanese government has been covering up the affects on Tokyo. Independent analysis has now documented secondary radiation contamination in Tokyo. Apparently while the Japanese government was lying about the radiation release, tons of contaminated sewer sludge was being sent to numerous concrete factories around Japan. Some of that sludge was burned and some was made into concrete. This is the kind of stuff that happens when fools lie for governments and industries.

For those of us here in Tokyo, while of concern, it is not panicky as anyone knows the geography of Japan, Fukushima is considerably far from here, about 230 kilometers northeast --and almost exclusive downwind from us(distance akin to say between Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.). Having said that, for the folks way up there from us in Fukushima Prefecture, especially near the exclusion zone, better have regular check ups for the rest of your life, thats all I can say, and for those with extended time in the exclusion zone without any kind of protection, get ready for the possibility of bone marrow transplants.
