CBS News Reporter Criticizes Michelle Obama for Wearing $7,000 Designer Gown in 'Poor Economy'

On the day a poll showed Barack Obama owning the failing economic recovery, a CBS News Washington Bureau reporter questioned Michelle Obama's judgment in wearing a $7,000 gown at tonight's state dinner for German Chancellor Angela Merkel, noting that other guests "dressed more modestly."

Writing on Twitter, CBS News reporter Christine Delargy said:

If I were her, that designer would never be on my list again. If that's a zipper in the back of her gown it is the worst job I have ever seen in my life. Like hems, zippers should be invisible to even the finest scrutiny. Wow! That was the first thing I was taught when I was an 11 year old girl and all through my tailoring courses into my 20s, I would have been forced to rip that zipper a dozen times if that were all the better I could do. I did better work than that at 12.

...and I swear they take those unflattering shots of her derriere on purpose.

No, I critique Michelle Obama’s clothing and style choices as much as anyone. But I also will be fair and say when she looks good. That little curly wig is feminine and looks a lot better than when she pulls her own nappy hair severely back. And she can choose absolutely atrocious things to wear, whether gowns or just inappropriate casual attire in public, but this gown suits her, her skin looks great in white, and she actually looks as good as she can. I will admit it when she does.

Dude — the dress I wore this evening is on I bought in the ‘80’s. The slacks I was wearing last week I bought before Jimmy Carter was elected.
