AUSTIN, Texas Gov. Rick Perry added immigration legislation to the special session's agenda on Tuesday, including a measure that would remove local law enforcement agencies' ability to make immigration violations a lower priority.
Other items he added include how local police use the federal Secure Communities program to check people's immigration status when they are arrested, and checking an applicant's immigration status before issuing driver's licenses and personal identification certificates, according to a statement from Perry.

This could be Perry’s ticket to the White House.
This is one thing Perry could do to get me on his side..........
Ah, Gov. Goodhair gets religion.
Years overdue. Where has he been for years and years? Don’t be fooled. As we Texans that know Texas politics know he is a RINO.
Rick Perry has been and always be the douche you have to vote for instead of whatever turd sandwich he happens to running against. Perry will only run if that is the case. He is a lazy opportunist.
Hard to say what got into him. He caught a lot of flack in the last Governor's race and probably a lot of advice that turned out to be quite accurate as well.
I am still not convinced. If he went to Washington as the Texan-in-Chief he would no longer be subject to the wrath of Texas voters.
I want to see what he does after the Special Session when little Ø' Bammy sends in his pack of hooting monkeys screeching "you are not obeying!"
Then we will see what he is made of.
.
I know one knock on Perry is that he was soft on amnesty earlier. He changed his position and got a lot tougher. I’m a lot less suspect of this change than old Flip Flop Romney’s flip flops. Perry acknolwedged that he changed and is backing up his words with action. I’m getting dangerously close to supporting Perry if he jumps in but I’m still on the fence until I hear more about him.
If he had any guts he would throw in the TSA pat down bill.
I don’t know. If memory serves, Hightower won the Ag Commissioner race pretty handily in ‘86 and was expected to have zero problem getting reelected a second time in ‘90. It took some guts to run against him, even with Perry’s (yes, opportunistic, but possibly well-intentioned also) D-to-R party switch thrown in.

Very well said, this Texan (OK, I’m a transplant, but I FEEl Texan, and I’m no “make Texas like where I left” leftidiot) agrees 100%!
He’s still a douche. What about the TSA?
Perry is going to run. I don’t know when the legislature’s session is done, but he is going to run.
I will have to check and I could be totally wrong but I think it was re-submitted. Now, has it been or will it be put on the call for a vote? I don't know.
.
It has to be given approval by Perry. He is holding it up.
He won’t run if it’s work. He will wait to see if Palin gets in.

I agree. I believe Gov. Perry should be given a shot. Yes, he’s got his flaws, but he’s a TRILLION times better than what we’ve currently got occupying the White House.
He has nearly 12 years of executive branch experience (approximately 2 years as Lt. Governor and 10 years as Governor), which is triple what Obama will have at the end of his first term.
People are looking for someone with executive branch experience and also with a record of “creating jobs.” We need to remember that JOBS is a huge issue on peoples’ minds right now. It must be acknowledged that Gov. Perry has fought hard to bring hundreds of thousands of jobs to Texas and that alone is an extremely strong record upon which to run for President.
And don’t get me wrong; I love Sarah Palin, but the Democrats will not be able to use the “they quit” argument against Perry.
Perry is also good with the media-—he pretty much ignores them and keeps them guessing!
Perry is one who I would previously have never considered supporting for a presidential run, but I would definitely support him, should he decide to do so, and no other awesome candidates are running.
No, he will run and Palin will back him. Make her VP. Bet that is what she is waiting on.
She mentioned that she liked him as a candidate while on her bus tour. Odd that she would bring him up out of the blue for no real reason.
“No, he will run and Palin will back him. Make her VP. Bet that is what she is waiting on.”
A Perry/Palin ticket would be interesting, indeed.
Palin won’t run second fiddle. She is a star and Perry is an unknown in comparison.
It would be a Ken and Barbie ticket but unfortunately Ken in this case is not the brightest bulb. Which is another thing about Perry. He is a lightweight mentally.
