I agree he was treated unfairly, but as I recall, a student had spelled “potato” correctly, and he pointed out the “error” and advised that it should be spelled with an e.
Quayle made a simple mistake.It was a gaffe; however, I'm not going to let a mistake define Mr Quayle. I don't know that much about him, but it seems like you get the point.
