KNOXVILLE (AP) - A University of Georgia graduate assistant and a Baton Rouge, La., waitress have been indicted by a federal grand jury in Knoxville in a scam to steal debit and credit card information from restaurant customers.

Waitress Shena Everett was in court Wednesday in Knoxville on a charge of conspiracy to commit access device fraud.

Just what we need. Smarter criminals. Educate someone with larceny in his heart, and you get a smarter criminal.

This has larger ramifications than just a scam in a moderate-sized city or buying "stuff". Obama's campaigns had a LARGE number of donations made by prepaid debit cards. The possibilities of having a device to steal credit card and debit card numbers and re-emboss new numbers on authentic cards (see No. 5) are endless. Whether he is smart depends on his choice of major and whether he is enrolled on his own merits.

I went from all cash to all credit when I got my airline mileage credit card a few years ago. Just last month we went back to all cash, except for stuff like rental cars. We have already seen a serious impact to our spending - in the good way. :)

Lol, true. There's smart...then there's booksmart. This from a different source: "Carlton A. Lewis was hardly the usual suspect: the son of a professor at a prestigious women's college and himself an honors student and aspiring doctoral candidate at the University of Georgia."

Also, "Lewis, a 25-year-old doctoral candidate at the University of Georgia, was pulled over in Knoxville on March 26 for driving under the influence and a search of his vehicle found 39 fake credit and debit cards bearing the name Ellington Anderson. They also found a device used to steal credit card information, and a re-coding device used to emboss stolen account numbers onto pre-paid money cards. They also found a fake Texas driver's license bearing Lewis' picture and the name Ellington Anderson."

"According to records made public so far, Lewis is the son of Trinidad natives. He has dual citizenship in both the U.S. and Canada. His mother is a professor at Spelman College in Georgia, a prestigious women's college in existence for more than a century."

More benefits of our generous, welcoming spirit and our colorful diverse multicultural society.

Some of the dumbest people I ever knew were trying to get a PhD. They were always majoring in something nebulous like Transgendered Pacific Islander Studies or Peace Studies, all of which should have been named Pander Until Caught Embezzling Studies.

Never lay your credit or debit card on a tray for a waiter to take with him to a cash register. It may not be fool proof but why make it easy for criminals?

This is why restaurants bring the portable cc scanner to your table in many countries.

Thanks. The reason I didn’t source the Knoxville News Sentinel is because they don’t allow us to use their entire articles due to copyright infringement. I pieced portions from KNS along with The Advocate and a local tv station. I rarely use the Sentinel as a posting source because they’re so pissy about it.
