I do wish that Orrin Hatch would retire

I don't. Orrin is one of the few reasonable ones up there and I like him. I want the good ones to stay as long as their voters want them up there. I have no idea who the challenger is so we'll see how that goes.

I’d rather see senators drawn from a hat with two year terms and no retirement benefits. I went to high school with Karl Rove. It’s Utah. Anything can happen.

Orrin is a weenie. On Obama’s eligibility his letters to his constituents came straight from the DNC. He was and is insulting.

And...You know a man by his friends. ( Ted Kennedy).

I don’t agree with any of that - but to each his own I suppose. I’ll keep supporting Jeff Sessions as my Senator as long as he wants the job.

Compared to what? it’s the U.S. Senate after all. :-) Compared to many of them up there Hatch is fine, decent and reasonable and nothing like Ted Kennedy.

I can remember when Orrin G. was the “conservative insurgent” for the Senate in 1976. After EMK winked at him, he was never the same again. UT though may not know that. Remember his silly outburst when he “begged” B. Clinton to “come clean” on Monica Lewinsky.

wiki excerpt

Early life, education and career

He attended Brigham Young University (BYU) on an athletic scholarship. He was the starting placekicker on the BYU football team in 1988 and 1989, and still holds the BYU individual records for most extra points attempted in a game (10), most extra points made in a game (10), and most consecutive extra points made in a game (10).[1]

While at BYU, Chaffetz became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.[2] He graduated from BYU with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications.

Chaffetz grew up a Democrat. While a student at BYU, he was a Utah co-chairman for Michael Dukakis’s 1988 campaign for U.S. President. His father had previously been married to Dukakis’ wife, Kitty, and his half-brother is former actor John Dukakis.[3]

According to J. J. Goldberg of The Jewish Daily Forward Chaffetz was raised as a Jew: “He was born and raised Jewish but converted to Mormonism as an undergrad on a football scholarship at Brigham Young University, where he was a place-kicker (reportedly having converted from high school soccer to college football). He is incorrectly described in many places on the Web as the son of Kitty Dukakis with her first husband, author John Chaffetz, before she married the Massachusetts ex-governor, but that’s not true. Jason is the child of John Chaffetz’s second marriage, after John and Kitty were divorced.”[4]

He became a Republican after meeting Ronald Reagan in 1990, when Reagan came to Chaffetz’s employer, Nu Skin, a multi-level marketing company based in Provo, Utah, as a motivational speaker. However, his political views had been drifting more to the right even while working for Dukakis.[5]

After college, Chaffetz joined the local business community. His work included being a spokesman for Nu Skin International

I would rather take a chance on new blood with Chaffetz than allow Hatch six more years. Both he and his evil twin Dick (aptly named) Lugar need to be gone next year. Thirty-four year in the Senate is far too long. Anything good either of them may have done was years ago. At 76, they both need to go home for good!!! Just hope there’s a good candidate to run against Lugar as well.

Orrin has given that “I’m really angry about being lied to THIS time” speech one too many times.

He’s never been a voting maverick of the Snowe/Collins school; he almost always votes the right way. It’s just that he is far, far too willing to accept Democrats at their word and to attempt to bargain with them in good faith, in spite of all evidence to the contrary.

Actually a large number of Utah conservatives are upset with the current legislature’s actions towards GRAMA, sanctuary of Illegal immigrants, and big spending budgeting. Not to mention the judiciary corruption a la Deb Brown. I don’t care how you feel as a “local.” Pass.

Hatch gave a very public eulogy for Ted Kennedy. UNBELIEVABLE!

You know a man by the friends he keeps.

And...His letters to his constituents regarding Obama’s eligibility were and are INSULTING!

Hatch is polished pond scum.

Good news. Hatch stayed WAY beyond his expiration date.

Too bad he can’t run against Bennett.

Between Chaffetz and the pencil-necked geek there is an easy choice.

Hatch has been heartsick since the death of his good friend Teddy.

Thanks for the excerpt. That stuff doesn’t really bother me. He was a young college student, raised in a house full of Democrats. I think his politics were understandable.

The good news is that his head was turned by Ronald Reagan. That means he thinks for himself.

I like what I’ve seen of him so far. I agree with what other posters have said: “Trust, but verify.”

Orrin has been crappy since Reagan left office. He was a great one before that. Just like McCain.

Sure you can point out minor flaws. So he's not a birther and he was friends with Ted Kennedy. OK. So what?

"Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) could be facing a challenge from his right as he vies for re-election, but he has some new ammunition to vouch for his conservative credentials. The American Conservative Union recently released its 2010 Senate ratings, and Hatch scored a perfect 100 over the last year, just one of 12 senators to receive a perfect score. Other senators who had an unblemished voting record include conservative stalwarts like Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) and Tom Coburn (R-Okla.)"

Now we know why Chaffetz is on all the talk shows.

I hope he succeeds in replacing Hatch, whose case of “Potomac fever” is right up there with McCain’s.

Having a usurper in the White House is NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT a minor flaw.

Orrin was INSULTING about the entire issue. His talking points came straight from the DNC. SHAME SHAME SHAME on him!!!!
