pulled up next to his marked patrol car

out of the white car's front passenger window. Bullets struck the passenger-side windows

I'm having trouble picturing what happened. When I read 'pulled up beside' I was thinking the cars were aimed the same direction. But if it is 'out passenger side, in passenger side', the shooter would have to be in the oncoming lane between the cop and the curb - something the cop would have surely noticed happening and which would have put him on his guard.

The official story just doesn't make sense, and needs to be massaged.

I'm having trouble picturing what happened.

For good reason. Good catch and good, close reading, guys. I missed it, because I had read an earlier story.

Chief Deputy Sheriff Manuel Longoria said Vann was responding to a call for an accidental shooting in eastern Bexar County. He had stopped for a red light in the left westbound lane on Rigsby, just east of the Loop 410 overpass, "when someone rolls up on his right and just opens up, firing multiple shots."

The bullets shattered the front and rear passenger windows. Authorities said they were not sure how many bullets were fired; Longoria said numerous spent cartridges were recovered around the shot-out cruiser.

Bexar deputy is shot to death at traffic light

If a passenger in the white car did the shooting, he did it across the driver or from the backseat. Since the rear passenger window was shot out, I think the shooting was done from the backseat, or else the shooter's car was not paralell to the cruiser.

The journalist and editor (and I) responsible for this story obviously did not pay as close attention as did you guys. :-)
