of course, its not just national cemeteries that have the flags planted for the veterans.

My veteran relatives are buried in regular sections of Allegheny Cemetery in Pittsburgh, and they have flags as well.

I wonder how they are able to get the flags at all the veterans graves, even those that have regular commercial headstones?

My elderly mom has a photo of a young man in uniform who lived nearby her in upstate Pennsylvania back then. He was killed at Omaha Beach, immediately upon exiting his landing craft. He never even made it to the beach. My mom still has that photo, and gets choked up when she sees it, 67 years later.

Her older brother was at the Bulge, and came home without a scratch on him. He was my godfather.
My dad served postwar...enlisted in 1946, when he turned 18.
