They are talking to short term current Hispanic voters who may very well make things tough for Republicans in 2012. Republicans need a Hispanic election strategy different than amnesty or government spending their standard methods.

I think the Republicans gain a lot of immigrant support, no matter where they are from, if they put forth this plan:

1) Secure the border
2) Evaluate all current cases of people who are going through the immigration process legally and fast track those that have already been here for 3 years without any legal incidence.
3) Give a period of time for illegals to begin the legal immigration process. Place them on a 3 year probation period. If they are convicted of 1 felony or 2 misdemeanors within that 3 year period, they are immediately deported, whether they were born here or not.
4) Those who do not begin the legal immigration process within the set time period and are picked up for ANY law violation will be deported and EVERY LEO in this country MUST check for immigration status at the time of questioning.

This one is problematic. They have already immigrated here illegally.

Also, making convicted crimes as the criteria for getting access to the legalization process seems like a very low bar. I think we need a process that screens out those that:

1) Will be on the public dole once legalized.
2) Will eventually become voters that vote for welfare state.

I have already seen problems with legal immigrants worshipping government after getting handouts.
