Top Republicans are increasingly convinced that President Barack Obama will be easily reelected if stronger GOP contenders do not emerge, and some are virtually begging Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels to add some excitement to the slow-starting nomination race.
Its a sign of the GOPs straits that the party is depending on the bland, wonkish Daniels for an adrenaline boost.
But interviews this week with longtime party activists and strategists made clear that many in the Republican establishment are unnerved by a field led by Mitt Romney, who could have trouble confronting Obama on health reform; Tim Pawlenty, who has yet to ignite excitement; Jon Huntsman, who may be too moderate to get the nomination; and Newt Gingrich, weighed down by personal baggage and a sense that he is a polarizing figure from the 1990s.
Despairing Republican lobbyists say their colleagues dont ask, Who do you like? but instead, Who do we back?
Its not that theyre up in arms, said a central player in the GOP money machine. Its just that theyre depressed.
And a huge swath of operatives, donors and strategists remain uncommitted, in the hope that the field is not yet set.
So instead of solidifying against the overwhelming force being amassed by Obamas reelection campaign, the GOP is indulging in an embarrassingly public and probably futile search for a more compelling standard-bearer.
House Speaker John Boehner, the nations highest-ranking Republican, confessed that he did not watch the first GOP debate of the cycle because he believes there is still time for more candidates to emerge. He said last week on NBCs Today show: I would expect that we havent seen all of the candidates. He then proceeded to plug Daniels.

That photo(shop) is somethin’!
I see Christ-Palin at the convention.
I see them attending the convention too.
;-)
Nice comment!
The party elites don’t choose the nominee. The voters do.
When it came to SC picks, Bush was even better than Reagan, not that the Bush bashers will ever give him credit for it.
You really are a sad little man.
Romney, for all his faults, is far preferable to Obama.
I see by your snide comment that you are a Sarah hater. I have no use for such people.
More ridiculousness from the Bush haters.
Good luck voting for Romney. I am sure he will not disappoint you.
I will vote for Romney if he is the nominee and save our nation from the evil of an Obama second term. Unlike you I will not destroy our nation by taking my toys and going home just because I don’t get everything I want. You are selfish and no better than a Democrat.
I know he is better than Obama are Newt, Daniels, Perry, Cain, and of course Sarah. Romney is a member of the GOP therefore, he is a Republican.
Madam, he is no more a Republican than Joe Biden. Pretending to be something you’re not doesn’t mean you are the real thing. I’ve known that fraud for 17 years, and I can tell you he is a Socialist to the core and has probably NEVER cast a vote for a Republican in a general election in his life. Both he and his father, the late ex-Governor of Michigan, were pledged to purge Conservatives from the Republican party, and in doing so, destroy the Republican party. He is a Democrat agent and traitor of the highest order. You vote for him and you get everything the Democrat Socialists have to offer, and get it all saddled on the Republican party. He destroyed, and willfully so, the MA GOP. I suggest you go back to the posts on FR from 2008 and read up on this individual and you will see exactly what level of scum he is.
And, btw, for somebody who has the handle for Palin, you should know he worked damn hard to see the McCain/Palin ticket sunk by sending out his paid operatives to undermine her, badmouth her, spread rumors about her and stab her in the back. It was “payback” for his not being chosen as the running mate, and it was also done to assure she would be damaged for 2012. He is truly despicable. Jim Rob also already made it plain that if that scum somehow manages to bribe/buy the nomination for ‘12, this website will be used to 100% oppose his candidacy in every shape, matter and form. Period.
What was that saying, A lie can travel half way round the world while the truth is still putting on its shoes?
The Media spent eight, make that ten years lying about the Bush Presidency. Even rational (but misinformed) people ended up hating President Bush by the time Odumbo showed up.
Even today, we have to refute the lies since the Liberals use them to make Obama look like the guy fixing all those nasty things that Bush started.
Imagine if 95% of “Journalists” were Republicans instead of Democrats like they are today. Imagine...
Oh BP grow up. Your betters know what’s best for you. Just pay your taxes and STFU.
I know. I know. But I gotta have some fun while I’m at it.
