Julia Roberts, Hillary Clinton: World needs clean stoves
By ALEX GUILLÉN
Updated: 5/6/11 6:03 PM EDT

Julia Roberts and Hillary Clinton say providing cleaner burning stoves to developing countries could save lives and help the climate.

“The impact goes beyond people's health,” the “Erin Brockovich” star and the secretary of state wrote in a USA Today op-ed published Friday. “Burning these fuels produces carbon dioxide, methane and black carbon, which contribute to climate change. And cutting down trees for fuel causes natural habitats to dry up, forests to disappear and soil to erode.”

Millions of people die each year because of smoke from traditional cookstoves and open fires that rely on wood, dung or charcoal for fuel, according to the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves. Those numbers are tilted steeply toward women and children in developing nations, who inhale the dangerously high concentration of chemicals and can develop diseases including lung cancer and cataracts.

“All of this presents a major challenge — but it can be solved,” Roberts and Clinton wrote.

Headline is misleading. Cleaner doesn’t mean 100% clean. If Julia and Hill were that concerned they’d be handing out solar ovens made from recycled materials.

Rocket stoves,

Lorena Stoves

Improved Jikos

All help to cut down "indoor air pollution" and the resultant respiratory problems.

They also save a bundle on fuel costs. Even the simple "Improved Jiko" will cut fuel consumption in half leaving more money to buy food.

So maybe Carter, Julia and Hillary should grab some Easy-Off, fly to South America and start cleaning.

MILLIONS? Each year??
A statistic would be 1,230,000 - Millions each year is just hyperbole..........

Cutting down trees leaves open spaces with sunlight where grass and bushes can grow and feed grazing, browsing animals.

Julia Roberts has denounced Christianity and is now involved with Hinduism or some such. Yet another hollywood wack-o follows the Piped Piper. The Gurus love it when holllywood entertainers convert...”Money flows to their coffers easily then”.

Anybody else besides me see yet another part of Atlas Shrugged being proven true (ie, the wasteful, no-return benefit help to the people’s states)?

Let me guess. “GE makes the ‘cleanest’ and ‘greenest’ stoves you can buy”. They’re doing commercials now.

“Julia Roberts and Hillary Clinton say providing cleaner burning stoves to developing countries could save lives and help the climate...”

That, and one sheet/square of toilet paper per poop, should do the trick of saving the planet and lives in the process...lol

People’s stoves are making the Earth warmer. Who’d a thunk it? I never thought I’d live in an age when ordinarily sensible people were paranoid about the climate.

LOOKS LIKE CO2 is a VERY GOOD THING! Photosynthesis (English pronunciation: /foʊtoʊˈsɪnθəsɪs/; from the Greek φώτο- [photo-], "light," and σύνθεσις [synthesis], "putting together", "composition") is a process that converts carbon dioxide into organic compounds, especially sugars, using the energy from sunlight. Photosynthesis occurs in plants, algae, and many species of bacteria, but not in archaea. Photosynthetic organisms are called photoautotrophs, since they can create their own food. In plants, algae, and cyanobacteria, photosynthesis uses carbon dioxide and water, releasing oxygen as a waste product. Photosynthesis is vital for all aerobic life on Earth. As well as maintaining the normal level of oxygen in the atmosphere, nearly all life either depends on it directly as a source of energy, or indirectly as the ultimate source of the energy in their food (the exceptions are chemoautotrophs that live in rocks or around deep sea hydrothermal vents). The rate of energy capture by photosynthesis is immense, approximately 100 terawatts, which is about six times larger than the power consumption of human civilization. As well as energy, photosynthesis is also the source of the carbon in all the organic compounds within organisms' bodies. In all, photosynthetic organisms convert around 100–115 teragrams of carbon into biomass per year. LOOKS LIKE CO2 is a VERY GOOD THING INDEED!
