That’s just it. Al Queda operatives have in dozens, maybe hundreds of instances demonstrated that a suicide vest or detonator would be reasonably expected on his person. I’m not sure that even bin Laden being naked would have eliminated that as a solid probability.
Regardless of whether he was armed or not, Osama was a combatant and, more than that, the kingpin of the murderous aggressors: proud, premeditated, self-proclaimed and unrepentant. For the security of society at large, justice demanded that Osama be stopped in a definitive manner before he aggressed again.
For full disclosure, let me say that I am almost invariably on the side of procedural and substantive due process, ROE’s strictly applied, and sparing even guilty lives whenever possible. I honestly think this is one example of a situation where the sparing of the guilty party’s life was not reasonably possible.
And it looks like even the Pope and thre Dalai Lama see it the same way.
