Arizona becomes first state to ban race-based abortions

Phoenix, Ariz., Apr 1, 2011 / 01:17 am (CNA).- Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has signed legislation to ban abortions based on the race or sex of the unborn child or based on the race of a parent.

“Governor Brewer believes society has the responsibility to protect its most vulnerable, the unborn,” the governor’s spokesman Matthew Benson told The Arizona Republic. He described the bill as consistent with the governor’s “pro-life track record.”

The law makes it a Class 3 felony knowingly to perform or finance an abortion sought on the grounds of sex or race, with a maximum punishment of 3 1/2 years in prison.

Illinois, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania already have laws barring sex-selective abortion, but the Arizona law is the first to ban race-based abortion, the New York-based Guttmacher Institute says.

Supporters of the legislation said discrimination-based abortions should be prohibited.

State Sen. Nancy Barto (R-Scottsdale) said that some cultures are “bringing their traditions to America that really defy the values of America, including the cultures that value males over females.”

Opponents said abortion-performing doctors could face jail time if they lose a newly required affidavit testifying that an abortion is not for race- or sex-selection purposes.

Those against the law also questioned whether there was evidence that such abortions are taking place in Arizona. Rep. Katie Hobbs (D-Phoenix) said the only proof bill sponsor Rep. Steve Montenegro (R-Litchfield Park) offered concerned India and China.

A 2008 study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences conducted by researchers Douglas Almond and Lena Edlund examined figures from the 2000 U.S. Census which showed “son-biased sex ratios” among U.S.-born children of Chinese, Korean and Asian Indian parents.

The researchers concluded the imbalanced sex ratios were evidence of sex-selection, “most likely at the pre-natal stage.” Similar sex imbalances have been documented among Canadian Asian immigrant communities.

Sex-selective abortions can have significant effects when practiced on a large scale. In China, millions of men have no women to marry in their age group because a traditional preference for sons has encouraged parents to abort unborn girls.

Probably, but this does remind me of the case where PP personnel assured a caller that they could donate money to be designated toward funding abortions of black babies. Some of what Planned Parenthood has done is so blatantly racist, and if nothing else, this exposes that policy to more people. Anything that shines a light on them is good, imho.

You're right, it will expose their inherent racism, I'm just not sure it will actually prevent any abortions.

I don’t know if it will either, but I’m not sure we’ll ever know.

But it's still fine to butcher any and all members of the human race.

Insanity.

Just ban it! The practice of child-killing is a gross violation of the cornerstone principles of our republic and our Constitution.

I have come to realize that all of the "and then you can kill the baby" law may actually make the goal of ending abortion harder to attain.

It's like the absurd notion of overturning Roe and sending it to the states. All that would be doing is sending a message that it's okay for a state to legalize murder.

Look at the parental consent laws, EVERY abortuary has a list of judges who are prepared to sign-off on the flimsiest excuse as to why the girl can't tell her parents.

Then there is the ban on partial birth abortions, yet butchers like Tiller and Carhart were and are coming up with "medical reasons" to kill the baby.

These laws are usually proposed by RINOs to placate actual conservatives, but in the end they don't save lives.

Think about what would really happen if a pro-choice-by-state approach were adopted: states such as New York, California, Massachusetts, Illinois and a few others are where nearly all abortions are performed anyway; these are states that will NEVER ban abortion if given the choice and, with the exception of Alaska and Hawaii, just about EVERY WOMAN IN AMERICA is within one day drive of a state that will choose to keep infanticide "legal."

We are in complete agreement on that. I believe that I said earlier in this thread (or one of many others) that a constitutional amendment is the only way to make certain that abortion is outlawed in this country. Even if laws were passed by conservatives in various states outlawing abortion, they could be overturned when a more liberal group is voted into office in a subsequent election. It's time to end this slaughter. The only way to do that is on the federal level. Imho.

This has been a long and frustrating fight. There are times when the slightest hint of progress, regardless of how deceptive, seems positive.

"Our nation cannot continue down the path of abortion, so radically at odds with our history, our heritage, and our concepts of justice. This sacred legacy, and the well-being and the future of our country, demand that protection of the innocents must be guaranteed and that the personhood of the unborn be declared and defended throughout our land."

I am glad that you are astute enough to see the strategy of this proposal. With the liberals it is all about image. They are always on the side of the underdog—women, the poor, minorities etc. This is a way of knocking the wind out of their pompous self-righteous posturing. We may not believe the hypocritical poses of the left but many of population are not thinking deeply about this subject so they only see the snippets that the left presents to them from airhead Hollywood starlets, women's magazines, TV news etc.
We are dealing with a very sophisticated, powerful and devious enemy — remember who the father of lies is. We have to be highly intelligent in our approach. This approach makes Planned Parenthood look BAD and that takes away their credibility.

I don't know whether there is any race based abortion, but if their is, it is good to have a provision for it, just in case. The liberal judges may not respect the right of the unborn to live but they do recognize that it is wrong to discriminate.

Sex based abortion is a serious problem for the world because it is throwing off the natural balance between male and female in the human population. Another reason to respect mother nature.

Another reason why this is a good proposal is because it makes women see that their sex is on the endangered list. Many women have absorbed the lies of the feminists who tell women that abortion helps women and gives women freedom in their lives. Well, in reality abortion comes back to hurt the female sex because females are the ones more likely to be aborted.

One thing that you have to say about the left—they sure understand incrementalism—Fabian socialism. Sometimes you have to use incremental methods to graually defeat them. What have we gotten in over 30 years of fighting abortion?
