When Osama bin Laden was killed, one of the task force members communicated that Geronimo had been killed in action, according to a U.S. official.
That code name refers to the famed Chiricahua Apache warrior.
Geronimo was placed at Fort Sill in 1894 after several years of being pursued by the U.S. Army.
He died Feb. 17, 1909, and was buried the next day at Fort Sill.
The use of the code name is not offensive, said Towana Spivey, historian and director and curator of Fort Sill's museum.

Towana Spivey is also a old Apache name. On some dimension. I still think it was a bad choice.
If I recall, “Apache” was a name given the tribe by the
Navajo that means “killer” or “enemy” or something. I think
that they referred to themselves as something else.
Well, I wonder just what good ol’ Towana is an expert in. Apaches, maybe? Or, code names? Maybe he is just a fitz-all, general, run-of-the-mill expert. Good to speak on any subject.
I wonder if good ol’ Towana told Reverend Al not to be so uptight last time he was “offended.”
Next time some member of an “aggrieved community” gets his undies in a bunch, I hope I get to tell him, her or it not to be “offended.” I am, after all, an expert. I ain’t gonna tell you at what, though. If Towana can get away with it, so can I.
It was a code name clearly meant for “internal consumption” only, but it does kinda build Osama up now that it’s out. We basically equated him with a notorious Wild West legend. Probably necessary so all folks involved were clear on who was being talked about.
I’m not saying they weren’t vicious. They were. Who isn’t when they’re constantly at war. The Apache were just better at it. There are many races no longer among us because they didn’t have the stomach to take it to a level that the enemy couldn’t accept. Any race still living did similiar things to the Apache.
“GERONIMO” is the name of the Regiment that I servrd in
in the late 1950’s (501 Airborne / 101st Airborne Division.
So no, it is not offensive in any way.
An Airborne Salute to Seal Team Six. Well Done.
“Use of Geronimo’ not offensive, expert says”
####
“Expert” on what is offensive? Undoubtedly with full salary, blue-ribbon health insurance, and 60 days of paid vacation and “sick” days fully finannced by the American taxpayer.
A palpable illustration of both a fundamental mindset problem with self-destructing western civilization, and ongoing fiscal insanity.
American paratroopers during WW2 used to cry out “Geronimo” during their combat jumps. This was a salute to a fellow warrior, not an insult.
Some people just don’t get it or don’t want to get it.
That’s their problem.
I have to wonder what the response to this would have been were this to have happened during Bush’s tenure, or if a Republican had won in 2008?
Didn’t even read the article. All I know is that I am SICK and TIRED of the perpetually offended!
I’m of German ancestry. If they would have give osama the name “Wilhelm,” I couldn’t have cared less. Why? Because I am an AMERICAN first, everything else SECOND.
Sheesh.
Gee, that's a nice thing for his followers to know. I'm glad we're not offending them. /s
Sometimes I think our enemies should be offended.
I agree, on this though. Congratulations and well done to the professionals of SEAL Team 6!
Why not "'Scumbag' has been ID'd"?
My standard reply to “that’s offensive” or I’m offended” is
“So? I don’t really care.”
I recommend everyone adapt it for usage whenever the ‘offended’ express displeasure. All BS aside, it has only gotten to the level of stupidity that it has because most people won’t stand up and say ‘Too damn bad” and things will never improve until we all do.
Really? I knew the late Delmar Taft Spivey, as fine a gentleman as you'd ever be privileged to be acquainted. He was from Virginia or North Carolina, if memory serves.
That’s a intersting take. Giving the zero some machismo. God knows he needs some.
forgot the s/
The code name may not be offensive, but I find a news article titled “Use of Geronimo’ not offensive, expert says” to be quite offensive. I’ll sleep better tonight knowing some random “expert” has nodded his blessing. Leave it to the trusty media to focus like a laser beam on the heart of a story...
Oh, one other thing: Don’t these idiots who are complaining know how military call signs are designated? Part of the process is making sure the call sign can’t be easily confused with another call sign even over bad comm links. It’s the same reason the words for milspeak (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, etc) were chosen.
Won’t say more except that this designation had more to do with phonetics than anything else.
Sheesh again.
“Drive On”.
“Geronimo”
C 1/501, 101st Airborne Division.
There are quite a number of us “Screaming Eagles” here on FR.
Good to meet you, Pompah!
