A yearlong sting operation, including aliases, a 5 a.m. surprise inspection and surreptitious purchases from an Amish farm in Pennsylvania, culminated in the federal government announcing this week that it has gone to court to stop Rainbow Acres Farm from selling its contraband to willing customers in the Washington area.

The product in question: unpasteurized milk.

It’s a battle that’s been going on behind the scenes for years, with natural foods advocates arguing that raw milk, as it’s also known, is healthier than the pasteurized product, while the Food and Drug Administration says raw milk can carry harmful bacteria such as salmonella, E. coli and listeria.

“It is the FDA’s position that raw milk should never be consumed,” said Tamara N. Ward, spokeswoman for the FDA...

An example of the federal government making a crime out of nothing.

I’m sure, a “law-and-order” conservative can explain to me how the guy is probably really a terrorist, though.

Maybe a Hannity-esque appeal to emotion and authority would be amusing.

Amen on the Jersey v Holstein debate.

Homogenized milk is not good for you. The fat particles are digested differently than whole milk and when comparing diets and blood chemistry of the two milks, the cholesterol levels from homogenized milk are way higher than raw milk. They are broken up too small if my memory serves me. They(homogenized fat particles) are not recognized as LDL's and plaque you up like deep fried corndogs wrapped in bacon.

IMHO this is about something else. The Amish in Pennsylvania have been under a state of one sided war with government for decades now. They want them out. Many have moved to Ohio, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Illinois.

I think it's a land use issue.

Why do they want them out? Do they think that it would be better to have other serfs, er, people have the land for malls or other higher tax generating purposes?

I wonder how many millions the Fed blew on this investigation. Meanwhile we have criminal gangs like MS13 running guns and drugs, and the Feds themselves running guns to Mexico. Just lovely.

We to buy raw milk here for $8.00 per gallon. It’s great stuff.

Ironically, throughout most of our ‘great’ nation it’s easier to find a bottle of 100 proof Vodka or an abortion clinic than a place that legally sells raw milk.

Insane.

I stayed on a small farm once when I was a kid. I loved the raw milk.

And I offer a belated apology for spooning off the cream.

Buiding permits, housing units, malls, schools, and fast food islands mixed with an Olive Garden and medical complexes help feed the machine. Many of the municipalities have gross receipts taxes in that area. Farms are exempt.

If raw milk should never be consumed because it’s dangerous, then I should not be here because I grew up on it.

"I challenge the FDA to show me where in Article 1 Section 8 of the Constitution that the States delegated the power to regulate milk."

The FDA won't respond to your challenge. They don't care about you, and dang sure don't care about the constitutionality of their authority.

It's time for people to people to understand that the Constitution as written and amended is a dead letter. De facto, the President interprets the Constitution as he pleases and the US government does what he wills. (And this did not begin with Obama. He's just taken it up a notch.)

Any government employee who participates in a years long sting of farmers selling milk, needs to be deported. They are certainly not American and certainly not decent human beings. They are tyranical alpha types who have no business as public employees.

At least Clinton would have made something up to sell the disdain, like the farmers were child rapers and meth cookers selling raw milk.

I’m ever so glad our self-appointed “nannies” have wasted countless tax dollars to “sting” a functional small business filling a public demand. And, true to government form, the prosecution trots out laws/regs formulated 7+ decade’s ago responding to conditions even older in support of its position. Never mind the quantum improvements in collection, storage, processing and transportation effected in the intervening seven decades.

Back when the diary “regs/health concerns” cited were formulated refrigeration was a spring house. Milking was done by hand into open pails and the product was transferred in open buckets - all exposed to flies and barn debris - to cans indiferently washed, let alone sanitized.....

Contrast that with modern milking where milk is pipelined directly from teat to refrigerated tank under agitation to ensure even/rapid cooling to temperatures deterring bacterial growth.

Milk - from human, goat or cows - is a living organism containing its own digestive enzymes and bacterial cultures. “Healthful” processing not only destroys “bad” bacteria, but the good ones as well. Yogurt and cheese are seen as “health foods”, yet they can’t be made from processed milk. They require the “raw product”, replete with natural bacteria, or such must be added prior to processing.

And here’s another bit of modern folklore worth consideration. “Homogenized” milk - milk with the fats broken down into such small globules they can’t seperate - also means those fats are small enough to be directly absorbed into the bloodstream rather than be digested by the bile and bacteria natural to the human gut. Could that be where arterial plaque comes from ? >PS

I wish I could get "raw" milk - and yes, without buying a cow. When I want something that tastes like milk should, I buy Half & Half, it's not the same but it sure tastes better than regular milk.

Would love to have a glass of raw milk again because I have forgotten what it tasted like.

It's not raw milk but have you tried drinking Half & Half, very rich.

remember springtime raw milk on grass fed cows and the onion taste from all the spring onion grass?

I didn't until you mentioned it, that is some nasty stuff.
