A cop off the clock is just another armed citizen.

Meaning: in most states they dont have a right to screw with someone off duty unless that person is comitting a felony.

When he is on the clock for the resturant....then he’s a security gaurd...not a “police officer”.

The rules for use of force are well established within the law enforcement and criminal justice systems. Many factors affect the level of force justified. Some of these are size/sex of the officer or assailant, longevity of the resistance/conflict, mental state of the resistor, drugs/alcohol involved, environmental factors such as other in the vicinity of unknown sympathies, light availability, etc.

The fact that two people were resisting one officer, in a crowd of people of unknown sympathies, ramped up the justifiable force substantially. Bottom line: don’t interfere with and then punch a cop.

“So now it is from hit to a grab, “

That makes no sense.

She grabbed him.

He hit her to stop her interfering/attacking him.

Look, you obviously have issues with authority, any authority. It is also clear you have spite in your heart against all police officers, no matter who they are and what they do. We all can see that. That is plain as day given your comment, especially your personal attack against the officer. Very brave of you. Here's a clue: Internet tough guys spewing insults are boring.

So, it is time to grow up and see the real world for what it is: there is a certain population out there that is criminal and violent and have no respect for you or criminal laws, let alone civil behavior. Someone attacking/grabbing an officer is acting unwisely and anyone with a clear mind can see that.

Have a nice day.

I can't make the ruling that it's "OK", I'm just saying that I would have done the same thing if I had been the officer.

"She can't defend herself"? What the hell is that, SHE threw the first punch...it was the officer having to defend HIMself, and she deserved what she to.

Did you even watch the video, or just jump on your high-horse and ride off in all directions?

You're just flat out wrong. A cop can be charged with NOT intervening when a crime is committed when off duty. Please inform yourself before spouting absurdities.

How did you watch the video and claim she threw the “first” punch?

My Dad taught me a gentleman NEVER strikes a lady. But if a female person hits you, she ain’t no lady and is fair game for retaliation.

I was taught to say, "Mam, if you make a fist like a man, you are going to be beat like a man". I am up for taking some slaps (never have been), but I'll be damned if I let ANYONE punch me.

What “crime” was being comitted here when he “lunged at the customer?”

Please be specific.

And you blanket statement that a cop is “never off duty” is simply laughable...

A cops Off duty “rights” vary widely between jurisdictions...some off duty cops arent even allowed to carry their service weapons while off duty...

Off duty cops are charged with crimes or SUED for trying to assert ON DUTY police privilages all the time...and they dont always win those cases...

Tell me one jurisdiction (besides leftist Canada) where a cop is not allowed to carry his service weapon while "off duty."

Please quit insulting intelligent FReepers.

IIRC, a Little Rock LEO got in BIG trouble when he left his duty firearm at home. They don't have to carry their Glock 22, but they do have to carry an off duty firearm. He didn't stop a Robbery at a pizza shop, didn't have his gun (and probably saved his life), but he violated policy and got handed a few weeks w/o pay (vacation).

Laws will vary state to state, it used to be in AR you are full time, licensed, certified cop capable of any traffic enforcement, misdemeanor arrest, warrant serving, or felony arrest as long as your B&C (badge and credentials) are valid at a cop shop no matter if you are on shift or out of uniform. Don't know what the law is today though....one thing is for certain....it is "Yes sir", "No sir", "Thank you sir" 24.7.

I'd say that this is the case everywhere, especially in the South (this was in Georgia.) Texas is certainly no exception.

Regardless of his chosen profession he is a man who hit a woman. That is bad enough, but he hit her first and then struck her again after she retaliated. Every honorable man in that restaurant should have stood up and dragged him out of there. There is no excuse for this type of behavior regardless if you are a politician, a doctor, a ditch digger, or a police officer.

Perhaps instead of musing about how other people have problems with "authority" (I wonder when exactly public servants gained power over the people) perhaps you should wonder why you are excusing the obviously bad behavior of a man just because he happens to be an "authority" figure.

Someone grabbing a police officer engaging in a personal scuffle isn't wise. Police will generally never admit to any wrongdoing whatsoever, and there are always sycophants that will support the police regardless of clear and obvious wrong doing captured on film. It's a fight that someone simply isn't likely to win. On the other hand our country was founded by people willing to fight against authority in a war no one thought they could win simply because it was the right thing to do. We as citizens of this country should be willing to do the same thing, and those toadying synchophants that whine that we should never ever stand up for what is right, despite the probable outcome, should be recognized as the neo-Tories they are.

They must not train cops well in Atlanta. She she grabbed him, he should have subdued her with a wrist lock. Rootie tootie fast and fruity.

Seeing that is was after 3:00 AM on Sunday morning when the barflies are most active, I'd bet a month's salary that alcohol stupidity played a major role.

That or badge ego...maybe a mixture of both.

Badges don’t go after people quietly, soberly minding their own business. Sorry, your unfounded accusation doesn’t wash.
