The most recent New York Times/CBS News poll finds that the current crop of Republican presidential hopefuls is suffering from an identity crisis.
This was a national poll and was conducted with a total pool of 1,116 registered voters and 525 registered Republicans. The poll finds that 90% of GOP voters did not know enough the candidates.
For instance, they could not offer opinions on former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour, former Utah governor and U.S. ambassador to China Jon Huntsman.
57 percent of Republicans participating could not name a possible challenger to Obama that would make them enthusiastic and motivated to work for the candidate.
When asked which potential Republican candidate for president they like best, only 9 percent selected former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney while former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee received a mere 8 percent.
Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin was viewed the least favorable. Among Republicans polled however, 50 percent view her favorably compared with 26 percent who view her unfavorably.
No one has captured the imagination or enthusiasm of the GOP. The fact is that there is no Tea Party. There is no nationwide organization and no Tea Party candidates.
A lack of leadership has led to people like Donald Trump to make the Republican Party look like a sideshow. Donald Trump is not serious candidate for president of the United States. He is a media master and public relations machine.
The Republican Party has allowed itself to get bogged down on non-issues like Obama's birth certificate and Republican lawmakers who seem to have more of an affinity for the non-Party Tea Party than the Party to which they were elected.
The longer fringe and divisive "Republican" candidates are out there defining the party the more likely that Obama will get re-elected.

>> We have idiots running the GOP.
You’re quite generous with the complements today. You must be in a good mood.
But let’s be honest: idiots would do a FAR better job than what’s currently in charge of the Stupid Party, at every level (national, state, local).
ouch
Most in the GOP aren’t much different that the Dems. Maybe it really is time for a third party. I consider myself a conservative, not a republican.
By leftists and RINO pros. Because they go along to admit: Among Republicans polled however, 50 percent view her favorably.
Hmm. Never heard of Pawlenti, Barbour, or Huntsman, and only small minorities (8 and 9%) like Romney or Huckabee.
Could it possibly be that there is some bias here? Everyone has heard of Sarah Palin. And at least 50% like her, despite all the negative press and the no doubt careful selection of those polled.
Everybody is “hijacking” every party these days. The tea party has the votes and a reason to vote. They own what they bring to the table ...which is a lot more than the establishment offers. Trump isn’t a Republican, so he doesn’t count.
Well I get that Trump has baggage and is not the best. But this GOP hack is dumping on everyone in the article who is actually trying to attack Obama.
I too am a conservative, not a Republican.
Sure, I've heard of him, but all those ol'boys in Utah were all in favor of important cheap labor from Mexico.
No one has spoken up to get Huntsman off that hook so we have to assume he's an "open borders" fanatic like the others.
I am not sure why anyone would put Huntsman on the poll. How about some of our better known Freepers? I'm sure Lazmataz could poll as high as Huntsman or Pawlenty!
The Republican party is not going down just because no one knows these two guys ~ they probably don't know each other for that matter.
I agree Trump isn’t Republican. Therefore it is unjust to lump Trump with everyone else like Palin and attack the Tea Party. It just angers me the GOP doesn’t care who Obama is because what is shows that he gets a free pass to do whatever he wants and say whatever he wants with no rebuttal about his past, his associations, his background and his ties to radicals who he worked with, dealt with, and was raised by. It is like the GOP doesn’t want to admit that Obama is a marxist.
That’s two of us!!
Be Ever Vigilant!!
Her numbers have always been a 25 to 30% do not support and that is among republicans and conservatives. Nothing new here.
Try the Libertarian Party. They would put a stop to the Big Government nonsense. The Social Baloney will take care of itself. If you want a mind yer own business bare bones government.
Well I get where that opinion comes from. Writes poorly for a "professor". As a "decider" in the next election, the only party is the Tea Party at this point as far as I'm concerned.
The folks currently running the Republican party at the local and state levels just came away from one of the truly great Republican all time electoral victories ~ so if they're idiots, they're our idiots, and they're clever if not smart.
Now at the national level you got a point. After that incredible historic election the RNC FIRED our guy and brought in a goober from Wisconsin.
See that mess he's left Walker? Short one vote to be able to rule without union interference ~ what that means is the Wisconsin party pro isn't smart enough to get the job done, so yeah, he may well be an idiot.
Everybody knows that when you go for the gonads you go for ALL the gonads. He left one behind and it's a mess.
How likely am I to believe a poll commissioned by two organizations as totally dishonest as The New York Times and CBS News? Not at all.
As sophisticated as polling is today, you can get any result you want, including a survey of Republicans, by surveying the “right” age groups and Zip Codes.
**Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin was viewed the least favorable
ouch**
The Stupid Party fought against RONALD REAGAN every step of the way, too!!
Trump is Entertaining, but I’d never vote for him!
