You still don't get it do you? All the causes listed there relate back to slavery. The cotton gin made chattel slavery viable. Abolition is about slavery. And, in the matter of states rights', the South Carlonians were complaining that New England states were flouting the federal Fugitive Slave Act. What's wrong with Abraham Lincoln winning the Presidency? (Maybe it's because he would stop the spread of slavery.)

My essential point is this: if you actually read that what was written by the legislature-- they tell you that the war is about slavery. They made the decision to go to war--and they told us why.

Yup, that's a good one to go to in order to start exploring the issue.

I've never really liked that, all my life and especially throughout my education, the issue of Southern Secession has been boiled down to soundbites and argument via slogans.

The Civil War, and what led up to it, are incredibly complex issues that trace their origins back to before the founding of our country, going well beyond the calls of "Slavery" and "States Rights".

Given the amount of American blood that was shed on both sides it deserves to be treated and discussed as such. We dishonor the dead by doing otherwise.
