I always fill up my rentals some distance from the airport. Most rentals get about 20 mpg, so about 10 miles away only uses half a gallon I rented a car in Vegas last year, and the "fine print" on the contract said that if you returned the car with a full tank of gas after filling up, you had to show them a receipt indicating the station was within 10 miles of the airport.
Don't know if that's universal, but there are a lot of hidden fees and taxes around...

Don't you just hate it when you pick up a rental and find that the fuel gauge is just sitting on "F", and you know there're a couple of gallons less than full that don't register? Also, some auto brands have more accurate fuel gauges than others. It used to be that GM cars had about 1/3 of a tank left when the fuel gauge was on 1/2. The Fords I've been in have had a much better linear relationship between the actual gasoline left and what was showing on the gauge.

Thanks for the clue. Fill up where it’s cheap, then top it off with a gallon or two outside the airport, and be sure to keep the receipt.

“Cheap” being a relative term, mind you.
