Pastor Terry Jones imprisoned to prevent Detroit Koran protest
The Telegraph ^ | 4/23/2011

The US pastor whose burning of a Koran sparked deadly violence in Afghanistan was briefly jailed in a heavily Islamic suburb on Friday after a court banned his protest outside a mosque.

A local judge jailed Pastor Terry Jones of Gainesville, Florida and his associate Wayne Sapp after a court found their planned protest outside the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn, Michigan, could lead to violence.

During his court appearance, Pastor Jones argued that the Koran "promotes terrorist activities around the world."

He also insisted that his right to protest against Islam was protected by the First Amendment to the US Constitution.

"The First Amendment does us no good if it confines us to saying what is popular," he pointed out.

But Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad testified that his department had received information about serious threats made against Pastor Jones from local residents, and argued that his protest could lead to violence if allowed.

Prosecutor Robert Moran argued that the protest had nothing to do with the First Amendment and at stake were security and peace in the community.

The jury sided with the prosecution and Judge Mark Somers set bond at the symbolic amount of $1 each for the two pastors, which they initially refused to pay.

Following their refusal, both were escorted to a local jail. But local media reported both men changed their minds after spending about an hour behind bars and posted the $1 bond.

Under the judge's ruling, both Pastor Jones and Mr Sapp are now prohibited by the court from going to the mosque for three years.

But Pastor Jones was quoted by The Detroit Free Press as saying the two "will come back next week" to try to organise a new protest.

I think jones is a huckster but this is dhimmitute and appeasement, pure and simple

the constitution is the law of the land, not the koran ,not some sniveling brown noseing dhimmi prosecutor and certainly not some group of ass-backward death cult following goat herders and their "police chef"

You are an enabler. Selfish and self-centered.

Seriously, if the Police cannot control Dearborn then it needs to implode. You need to get out ASAP.

Now it’s the Koran burning, what’s next? Beating women without headscarves? Taking pre-teen girls as wives? And no one says anything because they might riot? This is the tip of the iceburg.

‘Not in my backyard’ is not pretty. If we never make them live up to American rules, it will only get worse.

You’ve living by Hez’bolla and Hamas. Get out.

>>Gen. Petraeus warned that if Pastor Jones burned the Korans publicly, he was putting American troops in danger and harming the war effort. Pastor Jones didn’t care about American troops. Why do you care about him?<<

LOL!
So now since the guy was stopped, the troops are being handed daisies and chocolate eggs, right??

This arrest sends a very bad message.

And the whole world is watching.

During his court appearance, Pastor Jones argued that the Koran "promotes terrorist activities around the world."

He is correct in his assessment of the queeran. There is nothing holy about a book that requires its followers to kill others.

He also insisted that his right to protest against Islam was protected by the First Amendment to the US Constitution.

Correct again, but some person [probably a liberal activist] in a black robe decided that he was wrong.

Well I say bring it on. Let the pastor hold an Easter service at the intersection and left 100,000 christians partake.

Great be the glory of God.

Thank you for that info. I was unaware that one of Jones’ “flock” made such statements. The WBC loons are in a class by themselves, though they have many hangers-on. It is more than unfortunate that anyone would align themselves in the disruption and dishonoring of our fallen warriors.

Absolutely, FRiend. I wasn’t saying that anyones rights should be infringed upon like what seems to be happening. Just pointing out that Jones and his group are wackadoo loons, for the Westboro psuedobaptist support if nothing else.

Have a happy Easter!

“It’s provocative and unnecessary serving no purpose.”

Yes it is.
Arresting someone because their legal, if annoying, future actions might be met with violence by others is provocative and unnecessary serving no purpose. That’s why such arrest is prohibited in the Constitution.

Oh, wait, you were referring to the possibility of free speech, not the actual baseless illegal arrest. Got it. Twit.

This pastor hasn’t done ANYTHING WRONG, and so far they’ve thrown him in jail, demanded $1 who-knows-why, told him he can’t have free speech, then ordered him to stay away from the mosque for 3 years?

I think that paying the bond would have him implicitly accepting the court's authority to bar his protest. He should reject the deal.

In the various places I’ve lived, the sidewalk is considered public property. Were someone to want to burn a Koran, or Bible, or statue of Buddha or whatever on the sidewalk in front of my house I wouldn’t expect the police to stop them as long as they had complied with all the appropriate statues (observing burn bans, etc.). That’s the point of free speech and freedom of assembly; they’re protected irrespective of a person’s feeling toward it.

The issue remains the same: if the Nazis had a legal right to march in Skokie, then Terry Jones has the same right to protest in front of the mosque.

Jones and his crew are loons.

However, no matter how loony folks are, they and we are afforded the God given rights recognized by the government we must suffer under.

“All the Muslims I know are either serving our country in the military, or are dependents of people serving the country in the military.”

Just one more way to worm their way in and conquer.

“Of course, we’ve had a little bit of trouble with that, too, but you’d be surprised at just how many Muslim soldiers there are.”

Surprised? The word you want is appalled. No Muslim can take the oath of enlistment without lying.

“I’m not sure your solution is quite Constitutional, however. Besides freedom of speech, that esteemed document also grants something called “freedom of religion.”

If you would read a little more widely, you would discover that the Founding Fathers included among religions only the various denominations of Christianity and Judaism. They certainly never intended constitutional protections to extend to a satanic death cult like Mohammedism.

There is no God-given right to believe or act as Mooselimbs do.

I am referring to the recognized rights in our US Constitution...more specifically, the BOR.

Okay, so tell me where the Bill of Rights enumerates a God-given right to believe and act as Mooselimbs do?
