Back the, you got one when you got a job, just as you prsumeably did, and the number was based on the location where you applied (the first 3 digits are the state/city code - it has nothing to do with your place of birth).

Thank you for pointing that out, patton. I was born in Florida and when my friend and I were hired for a two day job in Alabama, (16 years later,) we applied for a SS card. Our numbers are one digit apart and have the three Alabama numbers first. Parents didn’t acquire SS cards for children back then.
