I thought his use of third person was interesting too but he has said he was born in Hawaii before using first person. See the quote and link below. I also recall that he told a young student that he was born in Hawaii during some question/answer session. So he has verbally and in the first person committed himself to being born in Hawaii at least twice.

“I was born in Hawaii, what can I say?” Obama told Democratic donors in Boston. “I can’t change those facts.”
