Trump is Final Proof that the Political Class Has Failed
Ricochet.com ^ | 4/10/2011 | James Poulos

There are two main theories cooperating to explain the Trump phenomenon:

1.Donald Trump is today's best self-promoter and professional opportunist.

2.The Republican field of presumptive candidates for president is lame.

But neither of these, nor even both together, can adequately explain what's going on. We can't even turn for supplemental help to subtheories that emphasize the rise of celebreality culture, the fall of Sarah Palin, or The Continuing Story of Bungling Barry. These variables all appear somewhere in the equation that has produced the Trump phenomenon. But none of them explain it.

Trump is suddenly "winning" as a political figure because the political class has failed. The authority of our political institutions is weak and getting weaker; it's not that Americans 'lack trust' in them, as blue ribbon pundits and sociologists often lament, so much as they lack respect for the people inside them.

This guy's onto it. Trump is talking "straight" even though much of what he says is baloney. We have a hunger for straight talk right now. Sarah's still the logical choice in my opinion -- if she'll only drop the "mama grizzly" drivel and start talking to the rest of us.

The candidates other than Trump seem censored to me.

People are realizing neither side of the political class is serving their interest or dealing with their problems.

Want to be more specific about the "baloney" he is spouting.

Politicians live and love vice, hence no one respects them. They are false even to themselves. They are as “brute beasts fit only to be destroyed”-John Locke

You notice that, too? It is as though they’re afraid of saying something that will alienate voters.

I can see their point, as a couple of Republican governors have made statements contrary to socially conservative concerns and have been knocked down in popularity because of it.

The attractive thing about Donald Trump is he calls it like he sees it - there is no bull shit from him. He talks about how great this country is and I think Americans are hungry to hear that again.

You are right. The other candidates are self censored. They are terrified to say what they really think because it may not sit well with some segment of the voters and they will lose votes. That is why you can never get these folks to tell you what they would do if elected. Trump comes right out with it. Good or bad at least you know what he thinks and what he would do so you can make a decision about him. I predict that if Trump gets in the race his openess is either going to dwarf all the other candidates or force them to talk straight to the American public.

Dude I have never been a NWO guy, but the more I look at the two parties and the way they sell out when they get into Washington. Maybe the freaking NWO conspiracy people are right. Its happening all around us. Its all about global corporations.

Right of middle, but America first. This theme cuts across party lines. Dems want higher taxes and amnesty for illegal immigrants (kills jobs and lowers wages), while GOP wants lower taxes, but less regs and more free trade (corporations have less supervision and can send our jobs overseas and leave the country stuck with unemployment and food stamp costs). Finally why is the US constantly unable to keep out of wars. Small wars breakout and the US must be there with troops, planes and ships. Time to finish the job and get our troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan. Wars costs up to 1 trillion annually out of our 1.6 trillion deficit. Military victories mean nothing when our country financially implodes. Trump gets that and many in the GOP (except for the Paul’s) don’t get that. The US needs a rest and a period of restoration. Neocons and arms contractors need to take a hike.

There should not be a “political class” in America. Term limits are the only thing that would actually reform our political system. As long as we have career politicians, we will not have true representative government i.e. government for the people.

Hell... political legitimacy went out with the Clintons. If a rapist can become President of the United States, than the rest is downhill.

I'm going to suggest, that since society is falling to pieces, they are selling out due to some sort of perverse survivalism. Kind of like how entertainers sell out, so are our politicians. Everyone is scurrying for a safe haven, not creating one of their own or wanting to join a safe haven, and then maintain it. Everyone is looking for something already there. Look at how immigrants come here, many just want to live their native lifestyle with the taxpayers paying and they don't want to change to accommodate living in the US and don't want to pay their own way.
